If your truck had synthetic oil in it, I think you are good. If it was filled with conventional oil, 5,000 miles isn't a long time with today's modern oils. I change my oil at 5,000 and the oil coming out of the pan and filter certainly isn't the nice clear golden color as new oil, but it isn't black either. (It always looks clear on the dip stick)

I would keep checking the oil frequently for any signs of new oil consumption. I would also report it to the Service Manager of the dealership and ask for an extended warranty. If he/she won't budge, find the General Manager and ask to speak to the owner of the dealership.

What made you post this very helpful advice in the first place?

I'm trying to set the all time TacomaWorld record in here for the oldest post ever updated. ;)

The best/fun part is: I never look at the dates: don't have to: somebody almost always chimes in with a crack about it.

I took my wife’s 2020 Corolla in for its first “on the house” oil and filter change at 3000 miles (my preference) assuming they actually did it. I called to schedule a second of 5 free oil and filter changes at almost 7000 miles and was told that my offer had expired (bastards). So I bought Toyota oil and filter, I took off the little panel to access the drain plug and the plug clearly had not been touched (how did I come to that conclusion) there was a line of pink factory paint that is on the pan and plug to indicate that it was installed and properly torqued during assembly and there were no wrench or socket marks on the plug . I have changed oil and filters on semi’s to lawn mowers and everything in between for over 37 years at a truck stop, I’m definitely qualified. Im sure when I dropped it off they drove it through the bay and parked it for 5 hours and called me to tell me that they were finished and I could pick it up. So what should I do with my new Tacoma that I bought at a different dealer. I already know the answer.

It's possible they used vacuum oil change equipment to suck the oil without removing the plug. It's also possible (maybe unlikely) that they're the ones who put the paint mark there. I'm trying to remember if I'd seen Toyota mark drain plugs from the factory and I don't have any memory of seeing that, but it's possible. Tool marks may or may not be there, depending on the quality of the tool. If they can put it on at the factory with minimal marking to the plug, it's also possible to remove and reinstall it without marking it up, especially at only 3000 miles, before much dirt or corrosion has happened.

It's also possible the oil didn't get changed. What did your invoice say? Toyota doesn't typically do an oil change during the first service at 5,000 miles, so it's possible it wasn't written up with one, or that the tech mistakenly didn't think it needed one, assuming the work order was written up incorrectly, etc.

I just remember when one’s word meant something, trust was earned and the customer was always right. Just one out of three would be nice now days.
