Took my truck into the dealer to fix a leaky rear axle seal and diagnose a check engine light. They recommended this service as needing immediate attention. Is anybody here familiar with this problem?

My 1st question to them would be why $2300? Assuming your not having any problems.

Thats what I’m hoping to find out, service advisor has not gotten back to me. The truck didn’t go into limp mode. Seemed to need to rev higher than usual when driving through the mountains and I noticed the idle was fluctuating more than usual. I have never heard of this problem before and I can’t seem to find much information online regarding this problem on the third gen. Problem is most reputable independent Toyota shops are usually booked out for weeks in my area.

Unfortunately after doing more research it sound like their diagnosis may be correct. If the valve gets stuck open or closed it can cause the symptoms I was experiencing. I noticed a reduced lack of power above 3,000 rpm. Question remains on price, but if I don’t address this it could cause severe damage and be much more expensive.

Yep that’s the part that shows up when in. I look it up. Been on hold with the service department for a half hour. Wondering if something else was damaged for them to quote such a high repair or what labor is involved. Can’t find any information regarding this part failing on other peoples truck.

Toyota harnesses are comically expensive, its the not the part listed.

I'd ask why they cant fix it. It's not high current or air bag related.

So it’s actually harness that they are most likely quoting. What’s does that part do?

Its the actuator for the valve inside the intake I believe.

Its odd they dont state what is wrong with the harness. Mice? Corrosion? Damage? what?

I’ll ask. I live in the southwest so don’t see as much corrosion as some states. The truck has spent a lot of time on dusty rough roads though.

Water intrusion causes the corrosion that damages harness, its usually called green death. This happens all over the planet.

It can look like this. Not my pic haha.

Thanks for the info, hopefully I will find out soon. It’s that price in line with replacement cost of its damaged?

So just got in touch with advisor. He said the harness wires were actually physically pulled out and damaged. Wondering if another shop could have caused the damage.

So... have the plug repaired/replaced or re-pinned. no need for a harness. Simple electrical repair...

I guess it depends on how extensive the damage is. I’ll know more tomorrow.
