That's a horrible idea. What time?
We make fun of Coasties, but they have the respect of this Marine. There training program is not for the faint of heart. And if I were ever in an unfortunate spot on the water, I'd hope it was a rescue swimmer coming after me.

By the way OP, thank you for your service and time. Mine was cut short due to an injury. Respect.

Originally went in the Army. MOS was 11B at the start then was undesignated. Then transferred to the Coast Guard as in 97 they were still DOT. Could get into more countries with less hassle under DOT vs DOD. 2003 change should be self explanatory.

It’s always been thus. Reaction and overreaction are as old as mankind. I’m convinced that books of wisdom are more about helping us avoid that nonsense than anything else but it’s the one message that’s consistently lost. Thank you for your service.

    All the normal TW BS
    • Uncle Ed refueled planes in WW2. His brother died storming Normandy.
    • Uncle Ken was with the navy on a destroyer during Kennedy years. He still served despite never learning to swim. Retired with Corps of Engineers. After retirement, he and his wife helped to restore over 5 parks in their community, create a veterans memorial park, and maintained multiple cemeteries in the area. He would still be at it if dementia wasn’t slowing him down.
    • Uncle Don was in the navy, too.
    • Uncle Pat was air force(?) in Korea. All I know is that it was so bad he never talked about it. So bad I wouldn’t know he was in the service if it wasn’t for a photo.
    • My mom’s aunt was a decorated nurse in WW2. She spoke her mind and did what she wanted up until she died in her 90’s!
    • Uncle Vince was army. He went on to architect some of the major dams in Oregon.
this is just a list of the few I’m aware of in my family, all of whom have had strong impact. I can’t imagine telling them to hide what they did for others. Good war or bad, active combat or being on guard, they are and were brave souls doing tasks not all of us could survive or imagine. @PTSDTherapy , your efforts and losses are something I honor.

What "Test" are you talking about? The same idiot test they gave back in 1973 at the pre-induction center? Me and and handful of guys were pulled aside after "testing" and given a 2nd test. Then after those results
were determined I was offered being a "90 Day Wonder" and Flight School. Hell, I didn't care what I flew! Kind of wish I had taken the offer. I got calls from the Military for a couple of years seeing if I wanted to join up.

Too damn old at age 70 to worry about it. I do wish there was a place for old farts to support the military.

Find your local military retirement home (typically state operated) and volunteer occasionally. Lots of them just want to talk and feel relevant. I enjoy my time and their stories. I thank you all for your service. I did not serve, but I know many who have (including my father). It was not my calling (I did consider after an offer following ASVAB, and discussion with my father). Again, thank you to those who answered the call.
