Getting dressed this morning and I see a fox over by the shop and quickly grab Rob's camera to take a pic.

Didn't notice at the time that pheasants were hiding up in the tree

I've never seen them up in this tree and it's awfully brave since it's usually full of bigger birds. Might start checking the tree in the mornings though :hungry:

    I have, once.
Just once, and I've done a lot of pheasant hunting.

It was almost legal shooting time and my buddy and I were heading from the parking lot into a field.
Suddenly a cockbird booms out of a tree on the edge of the field, cackling (as they often do when flushed).
He had roosted at least 20 feet up in that tree.

That startled us, I can tell you.
Worse, a guy in the hunting party coming up behind us took a shot (and missed)... right over my head

We turned around and went the other way.
I was furious, but there was just no point in engaging.
That sort of thing happens from time to time on State Game Lands.

I always tried to maintain at least, oh, 70-80 yards distance from the nearest hunter (except when moving in line with a hunting party) and wore shooting glasses, always.
The worst that can happen is you get sprinkled with birdshot, which loses velocity rapidly with range.
    It'll sting though

Just speculation on my part, but...

I would guess that those pheasants became aware that a fox was on the prowl and flew up into the tree.
Pheasants instinctively dislike being exposed like that.
Red Tail Hawks, in particular, are a serious danger to them.

I've seen Red Tails on pheasant carcasses a number of times.
Some no doubt had been wounded by hunters and got away.
    Nevertheless...

My wife asked me “Is it just me, or is the cat getting fat?”
I said “No, it’s just you”
    And…that’s when the fight started

Yeah, I've seen a hawk attack a pheasant on our driveway once when it wouldn't shut up, but I don't think they are anywhere near a main snack in these parts. Plenty of field mice, insects and fish around for everyone. Heck, we even have cats and dogs that wander up and down our road and everyone seems to just live harmoniously :notsure:

They also don't care for and already dead. The magpies are happy to scavenge whatever we leave out but no one else will bother with it. We had a bird frozen in our driveway all last year and nothing ever touched it.
