    2000 frame 1997 cab tacoma
    200 fram 1997 body
I have a 1997 cab on a 2000 frame. The title reads oneVIN# but the OBD reader reads the 97 VIN#. Anyone know how to change a vin to read the title VIN?
Appreciate any help I can get!
    cheers

I don't think 1st gens support a VIN write in the PCM but I would think you would want the VIN in the PCM to match the drivetrain so the scan tool can properly ID the vehicle.

The VIN follow the cab, swapping the frame will not change the vin on the cab or the ECU.

I am some what confused Just how does your OBD II system access the Vin ?

Non of the Mix and Match I ever worked on were unable to do this.

If it is able to do this was your Tacoma imported from outside the CONUS

ECM needs to match the power train like you stated.

The VIN is stored in the PCM, any scan tool with a VIN read function can read it.
Newer vehicles have the VIN stored in multiple modules on the vehicle.

I'm guessing he needs them to match to pass emissions, idk how one would get around that.
We don't have to worry about that here.

Any one that supports OBDII mode $09 can pull the VIN.

Must be a state law I never had any problems.

Passing Emissions here in Pa with the same set up different years.

I think it depends on the state and how they do emissions reports.
Im not sure exactly how it works but I'm pretty sure states like California and New York have to attach the vehicle scan report that contains the VIN and monitor status to the inspection report, if it doesn't match the title on the vehicle it won't pass.

I'm not sure, 2nd gens support VIN write in the PCM with a proper scan tool but I'm not sure if 1st gens do.

Try the dealership maybe. It might only be able to be written 1 so you'd need a new ECU. You might call the DMV and explain. Usually, the vin on the title follows the cab vin, not the frame vin unless you cab swapped but then idk why you didn't keep the 2000 ecu.

Oregon does it different. They issue a new reconstructed title with a completely new VIN. That's the problem VIN in the ECU is from the cab and I need it to match the new VIN given to it by the state of Oregon. Or it won't pass emissions. Becoming quite a pain it seems

Call the dmv and see if you can produce paperwork for the ecu vin if it'll pass. Pretty stupid setup though.

it passes.. the vin just doesn't vibe with the title so they fail it. So stupid! Go figure coming from a state government...HAHA

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
the ECMs on these trucks dont contain vin info. from what youre saying the vin on your title is to the frame, not the cab. in which case... you cannot legally swap the vin from the other cab to your cab.

are they scanning the bar code on your cab before hook up?

Nope there is no other VIN except the one stored in the ECU. THE STATE OF OREGON ISSUED A COMPLETELY NEW VIN has absolutely nothing to do with the cab or the frame VIN.
