Guys got another one that's a single wheel drive with side car, restored, $4650.00.
I might be more interested in that so I'm not tempted to off road in the two wheel drive model.

    Long day today.... again.

I met up with a friend to go riding, but since it was cold I decided to take the Versys instead of the KTM. We went on an extended ride and had a ton of fun.

    upload_2023-11-19_17-58-55.png

All was well until I went to pass a few cars and heard a horrible grinding noise. I instantly pulled the clutch in but saw the tach was at zero, and pulled off to the side of the road. As I was stopping, my friend said the bike belched a huge plume of smoke from the left side of the bike (not the exhaust).

This was as far as it got:

    upload_2023-11-19_18-0-7.png

The shifter was completely jammed so I can't even get the bike into neutral to see if the engine is OK. At this point I'm not sure if it's a transmission issue or engine issue but either way I'm pretty sure the issue was catastrophic. The oil smelled completely burnt as well.

We were riding pretty quickly and I spent a lot of time near redline and did a lot of quick up and down shifting so either engine/transmission damage wouldn't surprise me.

My friend's dad came and picked up my bike (and me) and took it back to my parents' house, where I borrowed their SUV to drive home.

    upload_2023-11-19_18-2-51.png

Now I need to figure out:

    1. do I replace the engine and transmission with a used one or
    2. get a different bike and part this one out.

Luckily I can work from home this next week so it's not critical to get to work tomorrow but after Thanksgiving I am not sure how to get to work. I'll probably try to commute on the KTM to see how that will go.

PS I was trying to get the bike to 50k miles by the end of the year. The bike blew up at 49,510 miles...

Oh man. I started reading this and looked at the first pic and was thinking this was a happy post. Then you just wallop us out of left field with the rest of it. OUCH.

Such a bummer that this happened.

My apologies that I can't keep straight who has what bike and commute and all that. I have some questions:
    1. What does your commute entail?
    2. Have you priced the engine/trans swap at this point?
    3. What is your budget for a new bike should you go that route?
    4. Can you carpool to take some stress off the commute situation?

Thanks, it's a bummer but no one was hurt. I was passing cars in the oncoming lane over a dotted yellow at high speed and thought I locked the rear wheel (friend said he didn't see that, though) before I yanked the clutch. It could have been so much worse so I'm thankful for that at least.

    1. My commute is ~45 miles each way, about 15 miles of which is lane splitting through heavy traffic. I also pack lunch, coffee and gym stuff so I take a lot with me.
    2. An engine right now looks like ~$1100, so probably closer to $1500 after I do all the "while I'm in there" stuff? (plugs, coils, valves, etc).
    3. I haven't even thought about a budget. This came out of left field since I thought I had a fully functioning bike this morning. I am also spending a lot this month already on a new washer/dryer and other things so not sure how big of a hit I want to take.
    4. I can't carpool but I can get by with the bus for a bit if I really need to (though I don't want to...).

Definitely glad it's was only a mechanical failure and didn't lead to an accident or injury. That is definitely the silver lining.

    1. That doesn't sound too awful. What speeds do you have to run on it?
    2. That'll likely be cheaper than getting a brand new bike, but used market might have some hope? IDK, I don't see a lot of really usable bikes sub $2K. This might be your most economical choice.
    3. It always happens at the worst times! I think we can all attest to that being how it goes. Emergencies/failures are never convenient with their timing or cost.
    4. Well, that's good news. Sure, the bus is less than ideal, but if you do that for a couple weeks to get the funds lined out it may be less financial stress. I don't envy you, but at least you have the option.

The reason I ask about the speed of the commute and budget is that I know there are usually a few decent used CB500Xs floating around out there. A low mileage one in good shape is usually $5K or more, though. So long as you don't need to go faster 65 MPH for more than 15-20 miles they are stellar commuter bikes. They'll run 80 MPH with my fat ass on it no problem, so it's capable of interstate speed, I just don't like the vibrations at that speed for long periods. If you were close (the fact that you can lane filter tells me you're not) I'd let you test ride mine to see if it fit your needs.

I don't know what state you are in, but if winter isn't the prime riding season you might be able to find a good replacement bike at a great price. I know around here riding is pretty well done, so it's the best time to try for a deal. Even if you are in a warm state where winter is prime riding, if you are willing to travel to where that's not the case you could snag a deal on a bike.

It's 15-20 miles of lane splitting but the remaining 30 miles is at around 80-90 mph on the highway, so as much as I'd like a CB500X I think I'd want something bigger.

I should just get a Super Tenere.

    NOOOOO much dislike!

Have you had a chance to poke around with a flashlight to see if there are any windows through cases?

Honestly, if I were in CA, I'd probably buy this one.

I don't like the bars, but they are better than nothing, and the color helps to stand out in traffic. I'm tempted as is, but I think I want to spoil myself with the electronic suspension.

I wont say no to another fellow super tenere owner! But would probably spend the extra $ for a 2nd gen (2014+ as some decent mechanical changes were made , preferably 2015+ as that was the last change of the cam chain tensioner)

That stated, you could swap out the cam chain tensioner and clutch basket (2 of the biggest changes) rather easy on a 2012-2013, as long as you are cool with no heated grips/no cruise/ analog dash.

Hmm, I do want heated grips and cruise, though I could just take those off the Versys as well…

Oh, I like the yellow. It's loud and get's seen better than the black/grey that the last couple years come in. If I get one of the newer ones it'll have to get a vinyl wrap to change the color.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Well shit. That’s never fun. After the smoke, did the bike just quit or did you hear or feel anything else?
