they offer it because they make a shit ton of money off them. It’s a marketing scheme. It’s what some people want. They don’t make money off warranties they make money off servicing vehicles. Think about it it’s all about the Benjamins

Everyone is so focused on the K&N that they skipped over this. This right here is your problem. Should have taken the intake off and cleaned it out way back whenever that happened.

This is true. The generational debate over paper vs oil is irrelevant in the OP's case now. My advice to OP, pull the intake apart and clean it. Change the oil and send a sample to Blackstone, if there's a real reason to have oil tested, this is it. Change the plugs and do a compression test, bishop84 is probably onto something with scoring cylinders.
Put a paper filter in it, a nylon over your snorkel, and stay the hell out of the mud. Good luck OP.

I think it is hard to say that isn't from the K&N. I have see that happen with other K&Ns, but never with a paper filter.

The question is what is bad. Is that build up causing any harm? Probably not. Does dust get by the paper filter? I'm pretty sure it does, but without the sticky oil, it sails on by the injectors and into the combustion chamber. Is that bad? I'm sure over 1,000,000 miles, it might contribute to failure, but with all the other things going on like types of motor oil, top tier gasoline, octane, etc. There are a lot of other things to argue about.

Might be understandable for you but that's quite excessive for any vehicle's intake manifold. AZ intake manifold shouldn't be noticeably worse then a truck from FL. They're called air filter's for a reason. OP has a chassis w/ 140K and an engine with 300K.

That doesn't look like mud from "several years ago", it looks like fine dust that has been accumulating over time. Mud would have chunks and rocks in it.

    Thanks for clarifying

Lived in AZ for 20 years, have family in FL, huge difference in off-road terrain. One is mainly the dust/silt in AZ, that stuff gets into everything.

Could be from mud ingest. Think we could all agree it is from neglect. Hey it happens, pulling the TB off inspecting and cleaning is often overlooked.

    K&N creates a vicious cycle.
Dirt enters the airstream. Dierks scores the cylinder walls. Dirt wears the rings. This increases blowby. The blowby gets reingested , coating the intake. The oil residue in the intake adheres the dust.

OP serious question… do you change the oil every 5k? Or are you a 10k guy? Reason I ask is because. From the looks of things you fall in the severe conditions category.

I was a “believer” in k&n for many years, boy was I wrong.

I ran TRD filter (same as K&N) in my taco and after I discovered a layer of dust in my intake tube, that piece of shit of a filter went straight in the garbage.

Never again will I be using oiled filters, OEM paper for me from now on.

Yeah, I've watched videos of some people having tested K and N versus OEM and OEM out performed significantly. It's time for me to go back to OEM.
