Flaking Alloy Wheels

Hello,

I am considering getting Alloys on my truck when I buy. Someone said this in a post and it got me thinking/worried.

Do alloys flake and if so, when does that start/what are conditions that accelerate flaking? I think I want them, but I do not want my wheels to look like garbage after 2 years.

 

Anyone?

 

Haven't seen flaking, but I've got a couple spots that have bubbled. I guess they might eventually flake.

 

are you in a area that has alot of rust issues?

like in buffalo everything rusts with the salt.

if not you should be fine

 

I am not sure where I'll be living because I am just starting my new job. With that said, I should be in the midwest and I hope ultimately to live in Michigan. So I would say, yes, I will live where there will be snow!

 

the salt used for snow will do some damage to both type of rims.

the steel rims would be easier to paint.

so i would just go with what you like best.

 

Mine are chipped and pitted a little bit. Its a 07. But I live in a heavy salt area. I still think you beatter than steel. Steel wheels in this area turn to rust in about three years.

 

As you can see I live in northeast ohio, aka road salt capital of the northeast. Recently I purchased 4 procomp 7033's and used the satan finish ProtectaClear. I applied the product fron and back of each wheel as they were off the truck. Just comming out of the first winter and the wheels look like the day I bought them. Check the products out, I think you may be impressed.

You may want to consider what type of wheel your going to coat, alluminum alloy, they make a semi gloss product, for my black rims I used a satin finish.

 

I had the sport wheels when I first got my truck. Here's what they looked like after 80,000kms and 4 winters. The truck was originally from Northern Ontario, near Pettawawa. I decided to use the stock rims for the winter, and bought a set of American Racing Wheels for the summer.

 

I was afraid of that especially after only 4 years. Thanks for the pics bud!

 

Take 'em back to the dealer. I had 3 of mine that were bubbling. THey replaced all 3 of them under warrantee.

 

I took my wheels in and they said "70k miles! You're out of warranty! Eff you!....shouldn't have sold your 7 year old Jeep with 108000 miles with perfect factory alloys!"
