Manifold caked with filth

Pull the lower manifold and clean it too. But that's about as far as I'd go.

You didn't mention anything about poor running or misfire codes. Any oil consumption?

If you're really curious or worried, scope the cylinders and do a leakdown test.

 

At this point I’d look for a bore scope and check the cylinder walls for scoring and cross hatching. Can you post a pic of the spark plugs you pulled out?

IF the cylinders are still good, then go ahead and throw that plastic surge tank/ upper manifold away and buy a new or good used one. There are valves in there that make it really difficult to properly clean it. And yours is BAADDD.

Lower manifold and valves can be cleaned by walnut blasting.

 

Yes that and/or worn rings. Was it using oil or smoking

 

cylinder 5 misfiring and rough idle. Spark plugs were blackened although I changed them 1 yr ago. I will attempt to pull lower manifold.

 

Glad you mentioned the valves in the manifold. I was just going to try and flush it out.

 

Doesn’t look great, but no obvious oil fouling. If you haven’t had misfires and haven’t had to add oil in between changes (& no external leak to account for any loss) you’re engine is probably still okay.

 

Ah you did mention it.. Time for compression and leakdown test and a look-see with the boroscope

don't those K&N filters need to be oiled regularly to work effectively? Were you doing that peroidically?

Uhh, the filter hasn't been getting dirty cause the dirt was getting through?

 

The filter is not super clean, it has debris. Just not as dirty than before the snorkel.

 

I would go back and recheck all your intake joints after the filter. Simply because you stated early in the thread your filter maintenance hasn’t been required as much since you installed the snorkel.

 

OP has been running the K&N since jump street.
Snorkel helped, albeit a mite late..

I'm going to try to refrain from any K&N slander. All I can say is that amount of buildup is more than I have ever seen before. Surely a K&N filter didn't entirely cause that, albeit it probably contributed heavily.

 

Guessing there is a clamp loose or a tear in a boot somewhere.

Think if you’re going to do a snorkel, probably should get the pre-filter style, especially running in heavy dust/silt like what is in AZ.

 

Definitely. Luckily I'm in North Georgia where our biggest threat is red clay, so I don't have to worry about that problem too much. Cleaning is a massive pain, though.
