Bill how did it play out this morning??

 

Hunted yesterday. best day ive had this year. rut finally hit the mountains here. had a buck drive a doe through the laureal,grunted in a small 8 pt. and saw this guy tending a doe on open ridge face walking out. tempting but only got one buck tag left. damn youngins have pics of every deer on the mountain. rain all day today,try again tommorow. Good Luck All

 

Well I planned on staying home but woke at 4:15 and saw it was 20 degrees with only a 2 mph breeze . So got my ass up and head to the woods . Got to my stand around 530 and had a deer snort a few times in the dark . Figured I would not see anything. Saw zero deer yesterday. Anyway at 645 I notice a deer about 100 yard out walking straight to me . Very thick just in front and left of me and way off to the right . Damn near impenetrable . So because of my poor vision I put the scope on him and see antlers as he stopped about 75 yards out . Looked again with the naked eye and didn’t see him so put the gun up again and he’s at 50 yards just standing there looking around . That’s when I noticed he was a shooter . He was facing me straight on looking alert so I put one in him between the his neck and front shoulder . Dropped and was done in 15 seconds. Found the bullet way back near the hind quarter when I was cleaning him up while he was hanging .

 

Congrats!! Can’t kill one on the couch!! 20 degrees though, ugh.

 

Wasn’t that bad because no wind . 2 of the last 3 days were brutal with the wind . My eyes are terrible so I use my ears more and when it’s windy I’m at more of a disadvantage.

You’ve got the cold, I have the heat. It’ll finally be below 80 on Thanksgiving. I’ll be in a tree Friday morning.

That IS my favorite shot. slight quarting away and punch between the neck and shoulder. never have had to track one hit there. all have dropped in their tracks. well done! also nice mushroom!

the bucks here RUT in 100+ degree weather

 

so.. i retired 10/9/23 and was looking forward to many days in the field. Prior to my retirement, which was delayed by 3 months due to lack of a suitable replacement (which STILL hasn't come to fruition) I inadvertently ran into a fire hydrant at work (walking) and tore my left rotator cuff.. moving forward to after 10/9/23, all was good except the unusually high temps, and the fact that the canopy, at that time was still full. A friend of mine, lives in a small town Crocheron Md. in the middle of and surrounded by expansive marsh land and the elusive Sika deer and asked me to come down and check out the stands that he has set up, and see if I was interested in hunting there. I respectfully declined, but his persistence and my stupidity won out. Now, I have hunted the "area" in the past, maybe 20yrs ago, and wasnt a fan, due to the extremely difficult (for me) terrain, potholes from logging that were unseen underwater etc. Well my dumbass feel 3 times in that terrain, and yeah, trashed my left shoulder as that was the closest hand/arm to the marsh. So i sat out to let my shoulder rest-up, and missed a whole week of decent (finally) weather. So i finally thought i was good, and went out and sat with my x-bow a couple of times, saw a few deer, but no shots. On 11/14 i was packing my truck at 4:00 am, when i stepped off the edge of my driveway, thought i was gonna fall, and obviously, and instinctively flailed my left arm thinking i needed to catch myself, which i didnt need to. After about a 10 minute crying time...i jumped in the truck and headed to my spot, all the time wondering if i was going to be able to dress myself when i got there. 20 minutes it took to put on my outerwear and boots. Got up into the stand, and after about an hour and a half, I had a mature doe coming towards me and I thought, freezer first amirite? and proceeded to attempt to raise and maneuver my bow from the left of me to in front of me....couldn't do it. So i sat there and pondered, WTF am I doing here ? So i got home and called my doctor and they said we can give you a shot, but there would be a 3 month delay before i could have surgery...... So that would mean sometime in March for surgery....nope i aint going to miss all of my springtime fishing, I am having surgery 12/19/23 not real happy about it, but....
