Everyone have a great Thanksgiving Day tomorrow, eat 'till ya burst, but enjoy the day responsibly :)

On a positive note, my former employer finally got my unemployment application straightened out with the State and I received my first "benefit payment" yesterday!!

On an even more positive, but very weird note, I received a packet of documents yesterday from CalPERS - the California state Public Employees Retirement System. As I have never been employed by any public entity in my life, other than the US Army, I was wondering what the hell they are contacting me for. Well..... per the cover letter

"This letter is to inform you that you are the beneficiary of the benefit payable due to the death of Philip J. Golden"

That's my Dad. He was a Plumber with the Los Angeles Unified School District for 31 years, he retired in 1995 or 1996, I believe. The weird part?? He died in October of 2013. TEN YEARS AGO. I have completed all the questionnaires included in the packet they sent me, I will be going to the Post Office today to make sure it gets sent back to them as quickly as possible. There was no mention at all of the $ amount of this death benefit. I called my sister immediately, she was the Executor of our parents Trust (Mom died in 2004), and she is also a public employee (8th grade Math teacher in southern CA), so I was really curious to know if she may have ever received this same notice. Nope, she had never heard of this situation. So.... I apparently will be getting some money completely out of the blue. Rather nice timing, since I still haven't found a new job yet.

I often share my story with the PODS outfit when people talk about using them.

I hesitate to call them outright liars, but I have the following two scenarios to share, you can make your own decision.

In mid-2013, I was moving from northern CA to Long Island, NY. I got quotes from a few of the big mainline carriers (United Van Lines, North American Van Lines...) and also PODS. The PODS option was the cheapest, so I started to move ahead with them. I already had a rental place lined up on LI, so I provided them with that address. That's when they told me "Oh, we don't actually drop off your PODS at a residence, we take them to the nearest PODS storage facility to your destination, and then it's up to you to come get your stuff and get it the rest of the way on your own". The nearest PODS storage facility to the place on central LI I was moving to was in upstate NY, near White Plains as I recall. Loooooooong way from Stony Brook. So I quickly abandoned PODS as my movers of choice.

In mid-2022, my wife, her parents and brother and I had decided it was time to flee the political and financial insanity of California, and we decided on southeastern Kentucky. My in-laws moved first. They chose PODS. I didn't know they had chosen PODS until after they already had their "pods" at their house in CA. I relayed the above story to them, and urged them to make absolutely certain the PODS people would, in fact, deliver their 2 pods to their new house in KY. Well.... when they called PODS, ,they were told the same thing I was - nope, we don't deliver. Fast forward about 6 weeks. My in-laws arrived in KY. After 3 weeks, they called the PODS people to ask where their pods were. "Oh, they are still in Sacramento. We only ship them out once we have a full load for the truck, so we are waiting until we get another POD going to Lexington, KY". Then, after their pods did finally arrive in Lexington - 90 miles from their new house, they then had to arrange for a local moving company to go all the way up to Lexington, to the PODS storage facility, and get their stuff on their own.

So, if a person was thinking of using PODS to move, I would highly recommend they demand in writing from PODS, that they will deliver to the requested end location, and not just to their own closest storage facility. Otherwise, do NOT go with PODS.

My wife and I managed to fit our stuff into a 20' U-Haul truck and moved ourselves to KY.

Ham's done, most of the sides are done, frying the turkey at my son's house. Doing Thanksgiving today since my wife works tomorrow (9-5) and my daughter-in-law has to work early Friday (0430, getting up at 0230) to get ready for Black Friday at TSC. Tomorrow I'll be getting my stuff ready for Friday and Saturday. Not a real busy day for me. Just topping off condiments and toppings. I could get a couple things from Sam's if they're open but nothing that's a show stopper if they aren't.

Good evening gang! One hell of a rain storm yesterday, the house was getting hit hard with wind gusts. No damages that I can see, I hope that everyone else made it through ok. I had to make an appointment with the MVA for Friday morning, the registration sticker went missing off of the license plate on the T4R. I don't know if someone stole it or if it *somehow* just fell off. Everyone have a nice Turkey day!
