Found your thread searching on mods for the 10.5" tundra axle. Rad Taco you have built!

I am curious if you have discussed shortening the factory axles with any of the common players? After the neck down past the factory splines, it seems you could re-spline the factory shafts as the OD of the shaft returns to the proper diameter after the neck down. I'm building the 10.5 for my trail rig, and 72" WMS is just waaaay too wide for what I want. I've got inquirys out to Moser, Branik, and Quick, but have yet to hear back. I do know Branik has the ability to cut the 36 spline pattern onto blanks for custom shafts, just unsure if they are able to do it on the factory shafts. I could go full floater a number of different ways and get custom FF shafts made, but I'd really like to keep this thing CHEAP. Probably should have just bought a 14b....

Thanks for sharing all the info you have on this build, look forward to hearing any input you have on axle shafts.

    Evan

Hey man, thanks. I appreciate it.

Although I have differing widths front and rear, I prefer to leave it the width that it's at for stability and ease of clearing the shocks. I always have adjustability using wheel backspacing.

Regarding re-splining the axle shafts, you could reach out to diamond axle. They do various custom setups. The land cruiser 9.5 is always a good option as well.

Finally installed the locker after a 4 week lead time for it to ship out...ugh. Cleaned up the axle and decided to switch it up in terms of color but probably will end up black again. Looks good for now. Also, drew up the mount for the wilwood ebrake and had it laser cut and powder coated. Now on to the front regear

Going down the rabbit hole...since I was looking into using tundra wheel bearings and brake components with the front end, I was thinking why not throw a tundra 9" diff in the front? Is anyone aware of someone attempting this? I mean the simplest way to find out would probably be to buy one unless someone has a 3d model of it. I'm sure it's wider and would require a custom ADD delete.

It’s a few inches wider, definitely needs a modified or custom jack shaft and ADD tube. The main diff might sneak up in there. Why not go all the way and jamb a 10” cast iron Sequoia diff up in there?

Tbh, I didn't even know there was a 10" option. I figured what was in the tundra was common in LC and Sequoia. Not a bad idea though. I'll have to see about packaging.

If it's different than tundra, finding a 4.88 gear set might be tough. Not sure what options are out there.

4.88 and 5.29 gears are available, as well as a locker.

Had a chance to get the truck out this weekend. Everything seems to be working as it should. Happy to have a locker again. Also, stoked to be able to engage it in whenever I want.

I seriously considered sourcing a 2nd gen Tundra front diff to see how well it would fit in the Tacoma when rebuilding it. I heard of one guy who put one in a 3rd gen 4Runner here in Canada a few years back and has since gone offline. It'x definitely a few inches wider than the Tacoma one.
Very interested to see where you go with this.

It looks there's a thread still out there, but it died off and I can't see the pics anymore which is unfortunate. Part of the fun giving it a go though.

Any decent roads in the park they limit to 15mph :( otherwise I'd be flyin haha. Also, don't want to nail a guy on a dirtbike or UTV. They always seem to come out of nowhere

Haha, I'm iffy as well. But then again they probably don't like full size vehicles either.
