“No HOA” was maybe the top non-negotiable search criteria i had looking for a home. I would never trust one to be continually common-sense-based. Seems there is always some amount of nincompoopery going on with them.


Greetings all from okc! We made the drive over the weekend without incident; saw a 3x4-maybe 4x-something buck go smack into a f350 dually while in kentucky. Truck was going probably 35 or so. Deer flopped and spun around for a few seconds before darting off. I imagine it rung his bell in a big way.

 

Yep, I do not have one. My mom does have an HOA… Recently her HOA took photos of everyone’s houses and garages and then sent everyone (literally everyone neighbor asked got one) a letter stating that if they didn’t have the exterior of their houses power washed, the HOA was going to sue them in circuit court.

I thought she was exaggerating or being funny until I went over there and she showed me the letter. They actually said that. I literally couldn’t believe it.

 

Yeah, HOAs are garbage. I remember reading about one that was trying to foreclose on a military veteran's home, because the veteran had a wheelchair ramp installed so he could get into his own home after getting his legs blown off.


My neighborhood has a civic association. Not legally binding, dues are mostly optional, and they take care of common areas

 

I remember living in Michigan - larger 'small' town. On a $190k house the taxes were $6500/yr. I was renting - I asked the neighbors why they tolerate that kinda tax. The answer was almost universally "Well, there's no-fee trash pick up AND they plow the streets!" But for a neighborhood block with maybe 18 homes, I bet we'd be able to negotiate with a private company for both trash and plowing and save 50% each compared to what the city pays. I like those things - the civic orgs who can work together to solve problems...here comes the inner libertarian so I'll shush to avoid the ban hammer
