It’s funny because I was just telling my French father in law who is visiting about this bike and I get on here and find out you bought it.

Initially I wasn't going to. I kept posting it here just trying to help the guy sell it and maybe help someone here get a FJR for a good price. When he dropped it to 3k all bets were off. I think I'll set it up as a rally bike for long distance solo rides.

I know nothing about those bikes other than what I've learned from reading Chuck's posts. I hope he's thankful that since I didn't jump on it.....he now has another bike he enjoys. He owes us

Well, she dropped a valve and ate it. Looks like the valve broke the piston, which crumbled into the crank case and then got smashed into the bottom of the bores. I'm still trying to take the rest of the block apart to get the crank shaft out, but it may not be possible without a crank puller.

Forgive my ignorance, but what causes a motor to drop a valve?

Broken valve spring, valve keeper left loose. Those would be the likely culprits

There can be a multitude of reasons, from not having the proper valve clearance (I had done the valve clearance 15k miles ago so I'm surprised it dropped a valve so quickly - valve checks are every 15k miles), to running too hot and breaking. The valve that dropped was the exhaust side and if the bike isn't tuned properly it could get hot enough to fatigue and break. That's what I'm suspecting, since I bought it with an aftermarket exhaust that can lean out the bike too much and cause it to run hotter than normal.

    Valve spring was fine.

It's going to need new everything, shrapnel got into the transmission and locked it I believe. Nothing is salvageable (or at least I wouldn't trust to reuse any of it).

or like mine where the woodruff key comes loose and you lose your valve train and the piston slams into it...

Engines are ~$1100-1200, and then I'd have to spend time and money replacing plugs, coils, fluids, etc and adjusting the valves and then the bike would be worth maybe $2.5-3k...
