Consolidated Super White 040 Paint Issue/Failure Thread - With Toyota Corp. Update

I have a garage-kept, 2008 Tacoma will some peeling issues underneath the hood (as referenced in the attached photos). I’ve hand-washed it, towel- or chamois-dried, and waxed it regularly since new.

Is there anything I can do to keep it from worsening?

I expect the trucks to have the same procedure, once brought into the program. Because they were already doing Tundras, Siennas, 4 Runners, etc in this manner.

I’ve already been to 3 Toyota dealerships and body shops and I’ve spoken to Toyota twice, their official response was “we haven’t had enough complaints of white paint on Tacomas to offer the repair to Tacoma owners”! My official response was “then you must have a different internet than me, because it’s all over the internet!

I’m on my 7th Toyota since 2006, 3 were super white Tacomas. I paid $800 to get my 2006 touched up, and now this one has a quote of $4,000 just to fix what’s peeling, not the roof that feels like 320 grit sandpaper, the hood that is totally flat, the tops of the fenders that are beyond flat, and the doors that fade from the reflection of the side mirrors.

The tape test is BS, that’s their way of minimizing their cost. Almost all of my paint has failed, if they do a tape test and fix just what the tape pulls off, it’s a 1 time deal, you’re screwed when the rest of the paint fails.

 

Unfortunately there could be a thousand people posting photos online, but if only one of them opens a case with Toyota, then Toyota only has one complaint.

On my RAV every panel failed except the hatch. When it fails, the whole panel is stripped and redone. And if the hatch fails later, they'll do it.

The process is good. The problem is Tacoma's not included. Yet.

You are partially correct. Only certain vins and conditions so far, not all 3gs. At least yet.

But when they are doing clapped out 2010 Corollas like I saw you'd think 2gs would get some love too.

But I'm glad some folks are getting some attention. Finally. Gives hope for the rest.

2014: Texas truck: no issues yet, no letter either. For a truck purchased 6/21 with 104k on it I wouldn't expect any paint problems: for years on a Toyota, Ford, Kia,Yugo or a Hyundai. Chevy Vega, or an AMC Gremlin. But maybe that's just me.

 

You can rinse it with 25 year old Macallen every day: no remedy.

 

Received the letter today! My Super White 2017 DC VIN starts with a (3), mfg in Baja. After being turned away from my local Toyota dealer for paint peel on both rear door window frames, I called Toyota customer service 2-3 years ago to file a claim. Escalated to a manager who immediately rejected it. I raised hell, and shared that we had just bought 2020 RAV 4 hybrid and 2020 Camry hybrid-both in 040!! I stated I'd like to file a claim anyway so my claim would be on file which they did.

Curious to know if these letters are going out to every registered owner of the affected Tacomas or only to those who have previously filed paint peel claims?

Love the truck (and color) and hope Toyota does a good job on the repairs. I plan to 'tape test' the window frames and inner fenders thoroughly myself before I bring it in, to expose any other underlying areas of concern.

 

Add me to the list. I was a no at first but i just noticed the paint it peeling by the door and only getting worse by the day. 2017. 6years on the road. Unbelievable.

 

Does your vin start with a 3 or 5?

 

Dont know. Mine came out of San Antonio Texas

 

3=Mexico 5=Texas,

 

Then its a 5. I dont think it matters though. It just seems super white is the issue not where it was made.

 

Majority of paint failures have been noted out of the Mexico Plant.

 

Has anyone figured out a DIY fix at home yet? I put white touch up paint on it.

 

I received my letter. 2017 Super white manufactured in Baja. I filed complaints and claims: A claim submitted by dealer that was denied a couple years ago, made multiple calls to Toyota customer service, a call to the head of PR @ Toyota, a certified lettwr sent to Toyota filing a formal complaint. After pretty much giving up, a couple months ago I went to a different dealer and they have agreed to fix the effected areas and that is scheduled for next week. Then I received the letter from Toyota a couple days ago indicating my vehicle was covered under the program and to wait for further instructions. Note that it will only cover the "effected areas". Filing complaints will help you.
