All Toyotas do 5k services, alternating oil changes

toyota recommends 5K and 10K OCI, depending on use. most likely fall into the 5K mile OCI category or criteria. i do, therefore i follow what toyota recommends.

I am the the weird duck, Ive built a number of engines myself and my race car friends all subscribe to change oil on a new engine at 500 miles and then every 3000 afterwards I’ve done that on everything and my equipment lives on

Show me any literature that specifically says 5k oil changes.

Every page has the disclaimer stating that driving habits change requirements, but nothing says anything about halving the oil change interval.

It's 10k for environmental standards, toyota wouldn't suggest otherwise.

Best way to determine when to change your oil is through an oil analysis. You can purchase kits from companies like Blackstone or Oil Analyzers Inc. Oil analyses will also help determine engine component problems such as bad air/oil filters, fuel leaks, low quality oil, etc.

I roll with 5001 miles myself. Seriously, I've been changing the oil in my vehicles every 5000 forever. They like it. 10K is too long in my opinion despite what the oil makers and long-life filter makers say.

Everyone seems to have their own opinion, except most agree that 10k is too long.

I bought my 2023 Tacoma 2 weeks ago. I am at 400 miles and will do my first oil change around 750 miles, then at 5,000, then at 5,000 intervals.

Maintenance is subjective; you have a range from “I don’t give AF” all the way to “I’m gonna hand this down through the generations of family” and everything in between.
I have buddies that make suggestions, under the guise that their way (bare min.) is THE right way, because they’ve never had downtime. Mind you; said buddies buy new, and trade in every 12-36 months.

many, if not most swear this is their last truck, but the reality is; more than half will be on to a new toy in 2-5 years.

10K miles is totally fine. As mentioned, do an oil analysis to prove it to yourselves. All you do is purchase an oil analysis kit; sample your oil; send it in. They will post results online a day or so after receiving your tiny bottle of oil from your Tacoma.

Read the corresponding values of the findings in your report. If I remember correctly, look at the Total Base Number (TBN) value. Then compare it to the chart. If the number falls within range, your oil is still good even if your mileage is at 10+ K miles.

I'm new to Tacoma World but not new to online vehicle forums. I've read numerous threads regarding the big debate of oil changes. Oil analysis is the greatest thing because that piece by itself will trump anyone who says to change oil at 5K miles. 5K miles nowadays is a total waste under regular conditions.

Would sludge build-up under the valve cover show up on a UOA?

but plenty of drain plug threads, filter caps, and skid plate bolts get ruined that way....

Honestly, this seems to be a thing for me in about that time span.

Turns out some places "stainless steel hardware" isn't as stainless as they purport.
