This is great advice in high salt areas.

Mine seized up on my 2013 4Runner in Colorado and then the heads broke off when I tried to remove them. I had to drill/tap them to get them out.

Wonder if anti seize would help?

We use plastic ones, they still break, but they are CAKE to take out. I just guess the drill bit size, bore it out and slam a chaser into it.

Anti seize only works for so long.

can you provide a link to these environmental standards that toyota follows to determine the OCI of their vehicles?

regarding what toyota suggests for OCI from their literature:

On page 38 of the Maintenance and Warranty Guide, the Maintenance Log indicates to change the oil at 5K intervals if you drive on dirt roads or dusty roads, when towing, using a car top carrier or heavy vehicle loading, repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32F/0C, and extensive idling and/or low speed driving for long distance.

This information is repeated in the Maintenance Log at 5K intervals.

    i hope that helps.

I cannot remember taking sludge into account. But, you should be able to deduce any finding through oil analyses.

This is very similar to the doctor taking a blood sample from you. Through blood analysis, the medical team will find all sorts of things wrong with you and how to correct them.

Anyway, back on topic, 5, 7.5, or 10k oil change intervals are GENERAL recommendations. Actual oil change intervals are dependent upon a crap load of factors that are unique to your driving habits. And, the only way to know what's best for you (type of oil, oil filter, air filter, oil change interval, etc) is to get an oil analysis done.

The Canadian warranty guide doesn't show that, but I found a USA spec and ya I see that section. Odd but makes sense.

The EPA regulation for shortened intervals is impossible to find in mountains of PDFs.

Basically in 2016 Toyota switched nearly all 0W20 engines to 10k oil changes to meet EPA regulations. So if you had a 2015 and a 2016 toyota (sienna, tundra, 4runner etc), the 16 would be identical, but have longer intervals. This was to reduce wasted resources.

I found an article regarding diesels and DEF, but its really hard to make sense of regulations.

    https://www.epa.gov/regulations-emissions-vehicles-and-engines

    https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-C/part-86

I did look for it though. Loads of forum posts like this one hah.

Would suspect the number would be around 3 to 400 threads like this.

    Are you located in Canada?

Well, so far only 5800 miles on my taco. All road miles not over 70 MPH. Hope the 10,000 mile oil change holds up. MTG

    Agreed with emphasized statement!

I used the 3K mile intervals with my 2003 Honda Pilot EX (I bought new in Hawaii Jul/2002) and she lasted over 200K miles until some lady decided to ride the suicide lane and ram into my front wheel messing up the frame on Oct 3, 2018.

5K Mile intervals is easy for me to do since I use the Auto Hobby Shop on Dover, AFB for self-help service.

    Love this guys videos!
And it's not just him... There are a lot of other video's (By others) who really question going 10K miles and swear by going only 5K.

Depends on the oil, oil's additive packs, engine condition, car usage. Short car trips in cold weather do not heat oil enough to evaporate mosture from oil.
I used to get yellow oil and water foam in my 2005 because of that.

I go 1 year/5K to 6K miles oil changes. Synthetic oil. Semi-synthetic 1 year/4K to 5K miles. Do not use straight dino oil.
Have a stash of 20K miles oils (very robust additive pack, GTL base, high starting TBN values). I may run those full 10K.
Replace oil filters every time, OEM ones run only $3.50.

Why doesn’t oil congeal in the container 5 months after purchase?

You change the oil whenever you’re ready. It’s your truck.

Just a general heads up, never ever buy an off lease ford product. My wife leases fords because she has a long commute and they flat out refuse to change the oil before 10k miles. Because of that those vehicles are all going 11k, 12k, 15k + from the day they are new.

So picture yourself buying a clean and spiffy off lease ford with an eco burst engine that been running dirty oil from day 1.

    Y'all been warned!

OP, I suggest you invest in an oil evacuator. Super easy to do oil change every 5k and the filter at 10. Very cost effective. Sucks the pan dry, put a little fresh oil in, suck dry again, and refill appropriately.
