That would super helpful and maybe even garnish some posts from other users who have had, but not yet posted about, a similar experience.

    Nice!

It sucks that it happened, but it is good to have a reference.

I would do the same, the tune is so worth it.

I am a KDMax tuner. If I read the ECU with the vFTuner software it will ask me if I want to license the vehicle and charge me. If it does not ask then it has been licensed thru vFTuner and has most likely been tuned.

So what's the answer when people start failing emissions because of their tune?

Try to flash it back, and hope that the software doesn’t catch it or just get another ECU.

There are a bunch of illegal as fuck vehicles around here that are either too new to fall under the six year smog rule or people invest time and money to revert them.

I’ll rephrase :frusty: Are the states and/or dealerships able to check for tune? If so, how? Your answer didn’t make it seem like there was a definitive way to confirm yes or no

Can you clarify the parameters at which a vehicle crosses the threshold of just “illegal” and becomes “illegal as fuck”?

That's the thing. Brodozers, turbo Subbie peeps, and others ruined a lot of it. We're tuning for driveability. They're tuning for all out power with stank exhaust to prove it.

We don't have soot around the exhaust tip or any real way to tell that we're tuned other than the Taco driving like we should have been given from the factory.

Yeah. Some Taco folks have cat deletes and such that the software supports and all tuned Tacos technically violate certain aspects of certification, but I'm in it for the results. I know were are still running as intended in the closed loop regions. That satisfies my tree hugger side.

Based on the quote above if you/dealership flash from 04B03 to 04B04, I presume then the Checksum value will also change. If so, is there a star chart that correlates ECU Calibration ID to an acceptable Checksum value?

Correct. AFAIK, a straight ECU Update will register a certified checksum. I have the 1st Post in the ECU Update thread that is now locked for good reasons. That said, if we can gather up the valid checksums, I would be happy to add them to the chart and ask that it be updated.

All this info is great, however HOW does the average Joe figure out if his truck has been tuned without having to consult a tuner to hook up their equipment? Surely there has to be an easy way to do this?

Not sure. Just that the ECU had been registered thru vFTuner. You could register it and not tune it. But you would waste some money.

So if I’m to read this correctly, there is not a definitive way to say for certain? Just a most-likely-situation?

That’s partially true however the smog shop doesn’t know “yet” or doesn’t know yet how to detect kdmax or Ott tunes . Nobody failed the smog yet tuned with those 2 here in California. However as what @Paco the Taco posted above, it would soon be available here in California and we will all be SOL. Hope not. I wonder how much that ecu will cost .

Reset to factory but if still fails, then get new ecu. Old junkyard ecu for model year might have been tuned also. Safest but expensive way is to get OEM new from Toyota . By then I might just trade it in . Anyway mines due for smog sept 2025 (2017 model year ) .

Is it possible to reflash it back to 04B03 then back to 04B04
