Agreed I wouldn't run them on my 701 unless I had trails close by...an extra set like you have is ideal

    @TacoTyusday Happy belated bday :cheers:

Also regarding the body ache comments... I'm 41 now and feeling it too, it's hard to know for sure what's age-related vs. past injuries. I will say one thing that has helped me most the last few years, and with my recovery especially, is stretching on a regular basis. Exercising is important too of course, but a good stretching routine does a lot for mobility and flexibility - which translates to feeling better when you're on the bike and all around

I've found stretching to be a huge benefit...maybe because in my younger years (lol) I never stretched before working out. Still not as vigilant with it as I'd like to be but it's improving.

Definitely a bit pricey, but still the cheapest camper + tent i've seen and does it all for me. TBH if I'd had bikes before i got the GFC, I probably wouldn't have the GFC lol. But man do I love it for the convenience and ease of use. Also a huge bonus to me to have the bed enclosed and lockable, because I do travel heavy for most of my camping trips. Perks of having all the equipment and friends that have none...but you do what you must to get people out there lol.

Appreciate all the birthday wishes from you guys!

Did a little cyber Monday shopping for the 2013 FJR. Clearwater lights has a sale until the weekend so I called and ordered a set of Darlas with fender mounts and lens covers. Ordered a Techmount steering stem nut GPS mount. Need to order a FZ1 Fuseblock and wiring kit, a Garmin Zumo XT power cable and mount, Real Time Industries reflective saddlebag decals, a RAM ball for my phone mount.

Need to decide if I'm putting highway pegs on, what frame sliders to use or cages for this one. Looking into a rack for on rear but not a full on trunk mount for this one.

The bike purchase is starting to look like the cheap part!

I had a set of Denali D2D lights on fender mounts on my first FJR. They were nice and less expensive but the wiring and contoller portions were more difficult to work with. Clearwater really has it down. All US made with photos in their instructions. For BMW owners they're even CANBUS friendly. It really is a case of getting what you pay for. I helped a friend install some LED rider lights with a Skene controller and we really scratched our heads figuring out those directions.

After blowing up the Versys, I decided to order a Fuel X Lite for the RC390. Supposedly it helps it run richer/cooler as they're a bit lean from factory.

Fully agree just the cost makes me go nah every time since the same price I could
Get another bike. On the plus side they did open a new install place here in kc! And my build was only 8500

HMMMM. Possible changes to the motorcycle heard?

TLDR: Sell grom, use GF's xt225 as my around town / to work put put bike?

Now lately I have been considering selling the Grom (2014, 10k miles on the clock, has a 164cc bbk and all supporting mods) and replacing it with something like a CB300R / Lifan KPM200 / Something a bit bigger but still smaller n lighter than a full size bike. The grom just doesnt get used as much as id like, isnt fun (from a safety standpoint) around town as its small, underpowered, twitchy, and with the bbk gets 70mpg which is good but with only a 1gallon tank is annoying. This is especially annoying when it NEEDS premium and you have to be cognizant of fueling directly at the pump as a single handle pump can hold 1/2 to 1 gallon of the previous fueling which is almost always regular grade. Not normally a problem with any other bike, but when your tank is only 1 gallon, you can see the issue.

The only thing the grom has going for it is the neat "small" factor.

The thought would be a bike that I could commute to work on easier than the grom (11mi of 55mph back road) but better mpgs / lighter than the super tenere, a bike that could do the couple 65-70mph highway exits to get to the other side of town but doesnt need to do tons of highway miles. The grom can do it but with lil 12in rims, maybe 12hp, only 4 speeds, anything above 45-50 is sketchy and just RINGING its neck.

I have also been thinking about selling the "GF's" 2006 yamaha XT225 dual sport as its registration is due in Janurary to the tune of 150$ thanks CA as its only had 20mi put on it since I bought it.... I bought it 4 yrs ago with the hope that there would be significant interest in it so we could both go out dirtbiking, but alas, its pretty much just sat (for multiple reasons not just on her).

Then it hit me. I ALREADY HAVE the bike that checks lots of the boxes that id replace the grom with (potentially). The XT225!!

Id get a second set of rims n tires (or just tires) that are much more street oriented for the XT225 and just replace the grom with it for around town use, and this would allow me to keep it for the point in time if the GF wants to ride dirt. Its clean, has ~10k miles, seat concepts seat, 5 gal plastic desert tank, skid plate, worx rear shock, I fully rebuilt the carb when all OEM parts when I got it. Its an old school tank, has no problem with any grade of fuel, can cruise at 55-60mph no problem, should get around 70-80mpg , is easy to ride and safer. This would be a phased approach. The grom is "bought and paid for" through August of 2024 (when id have to pay registration ), so no rush in selling it at this point. Swap tires on the xt225 and use it for this use case and see how it goes, if it works out I could sell the grom, IF NOT, sell the xt225 come spring as well as the grom and move on from both.

I just really hate having stuff sit around and not get used while simultaneously paying for them (registration is ~150/yr for both the grom and xt225, and insurance which is minimal but still a cost). The reason the Xt225 doesnt get ridden by me is it has nice new knobby dirt tires and "i have the grom". More street oriented tires for the xt225 would be 150$, so it might be a cheap good experiment!

Either way Im like 90% certain my mind is made up on selling the grom.

    /ramblings

i mean it makes sense to me to get a slightly larger but still small and light bike to rip around town with. and if you get the naked version it will basically be a larger grom

I know some of the folks on here really love the Grom and spend a bunch of money on mods and upgrades and the rest but I'm probably an outlier here in that I could just never understand the fascination with them. My commute almost requires a 5 mile section of interstate that would not be Grom friendly or getting up and leaving earlier which would not be Chuck friendly. Your post makes a lot of sense but I would probably go all in and get a second set of wheels so swaps could be super easy between street and dirt modes. Almost zero downside to your plan IMO.

I rode the RC390 to work today. My hands were frozen in the 40 degree weather. Heated grips should be coming today so I’ll try to install them tonight.

The heated jacket really saved me, I would have been so miserable without it.

Overall I really don’t feel like this is low in power. Most of the time I kept it under 7500 RPM so it wasn’t too strung out. I was actually thinking of maybe just getting a 390 Adventure or CB500X as a commuter now.
