I think it’s because the purported advantages of a manual just aren’t as true anymore. They used to be much cheaper and save a ton of fuel. Generally, neither is true anymore.

Nice to see Toyota is working on manuals for future electric vehicles too.

Depends on whether you're buying or selling. I'll probably be replacing my commuter 4Runner in 5 years, at which point I would like to pick up a cheap turd gen Taco.

Base model in Canada will be the SR5 DCSB 4WD, with Xtra Cab supposedly coming at some indeterminate date.

Works great on the mostly stock 4Runner with 32" tires and OTT9 tune. The dual-VVTi 4.0L has good mid-range torque, so it can pull from 60 mph to 85 mph in 5th gear without downshifting. For sustained highway driving a 6th gear would be helpful, but I usually don't see sustained high speeds in my rush hour commute.

Does the tune help with the mileage?

I “listened” to a few of the YouTubers reviews on my drive home. TRD Jon went full on click bait with his thumbnail showing 26 mpg pointed at the trd off-road then proceeds to compare apples to oranges, WTF. TFL took the trucks around Toyotas course and was a pretty lame review. Truck King had a long bed offroad shipped to them and did a thorough test. They won the internet for today. They said they will post a video going offroad tomorrow which should be good. Especially if it’s on their own flooded muddy course.

I averaged 16.1 mpg over 13 tanks before the tune, and 15.8 mpg over 18 tanks after the tune.

For comparison, my KDMax-tuned armored turd gen on 35s averaged 15.3 mpg this time last year doing the same commuting cycle. It's slightly better than the 12 mpg I get on trails in 4-low.

The biggest complaint seems to be increased turning radius. Does anyone know why they increased the wheelbase so much, especially on the long bed where there is plenty of space to move the rear axle around?

Better ride, approach and departure angle, though with the spare hanging lower might be a wash.

Seems like despite more gears the mpg numbers are pretty similar for thr 4x4 mt vs at. So AT doesn't even have that advantage going for it.

Contrary to what the reviewers say, the increased turning radius probably comes from the electric steering rack, not the longer wheelbase. The 2022+ Tundra had the same problem, with the turning circle about half a foot longer than the 2021 model.

Longer wheelbase may be due to packaging constraints with the 4-link suspension and sway bar, leaving less room for the fuel tank. At least Toyota only got the rearmost 1/3 of the fuel tank hanging low, not the whole tank like on the 4Runner and FJ.
