These aren’t exactly new, high cost items for Toyota or any auto. More leg room is a stretch, too. It looks nearly identical in video.

^Those items weren't included in 2nd/3rd gen precisely because of cost. Hell, Toyota is still nickel and diming with leaf springs on the Xtra Cab models.

I think the 4Runner and the 4.0 are great. We’re approaching 100K miles on ours and haven’t had to do anything maintenance except for oil, brakes and air filters. The engine has plenty of power. We will probably buy one of the last of the 5th gens for the wife to drive and I will take her current one as my commuter.

Based on the latest pricing that trd Jon posted, seems like the trd off road is going to be the best value for your money.

I recall seeing a video of the chief engineer saying that discs weren’t included because they didn’t want mud and rocks getting lodged in there. Discs are commonplace these days and not a tangible price increase at the supplier level. They’re selling us standard brakes like they’re doing us a favor.

^The same chief engineer that said the only thing carried over to the 3rd gen was the seatbelt bracket? In late 2004, Toyota execs told Motor Trend the drums were to save money. Mud and rocks explanation wouldn't make sense with the other off-road-oriented models (4R/FJ/LC) all having rear discs.

There's still a small cost saving with drums. That's why cars like the Audi Q4 e-tron still use them:

I think the SR with the MT gets my vote. 80 more HP for the price of free.

Around 5:10 in this video, Sheldon seems to suggest that the SR MT will get the detuned engine. I hope this is not the case, as an SR MT is what I would be looking at in the 4th gen myself when the time comes.

I know it doesn’t make sense, but they still said it. They’re cheap and trying to off load a cost that doesn’t translate at large scale to protect margins.

VWAG is criminal at this, too. My old $45k Golf R used a different thrust bearing that saved pennies on the hundred dollar, but ncreased the risk of crank walk with a higher rated clamping force clutch. Being cheap is by design.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the 4 runner pricing since the entry Land Cruiser is mid 50's.

Toyota got sick of hearing everyone bitching about the drum brakes so they finally gave us the discs and are going to make us pay up big time.

I would assume that the SR MT would get the the detuned engine, question is can it be factory tuned like what Chevy is doing? iirc you can bumped up the power paying them $300-400 on the work truck model. Or is the SR detuned mechanically too?

One of the videos I saw said it only shared like 40 or 60% of the same parts.

Can I get a discount if I bring my own rear axle?

Chevy had so much pushback that they got rid of the middle tune 2.7 and only offer low and high output now.

Wonder if the turbo is smaller, perhaps smaller oil coolers (or none at all). Smaller intercooler, etc. Toyota can be weird like that to cut costs.
