Just picked up my first Tacoma! 2004 prerunner v6 trd. She’s got 166k and drives great. Bought from original owner for 10,600. First thing I’m gonna do is change all fluids and new wheels/tires. After that is valve cover gasket. Frame is spotless. So stoked!!!!!!6CD81B95-6932-41FA-B12F-D182A23E9EF6.jpgCE0E8AA1-3CF7-4356-92F0-BC80AADFC4F7.jpg

    Well bought! Have fun.

Manual or auto? If manual toss some Red Line MT-90 in there. And use Red Line for the diff. For engine oil on these I really like a few of the modern synthetics for "high millage" vehicles as they contain a ton of zinc and engines love it. I like the "Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage Full Synthetic 5W-30" since its priced well and its great oil but I think most of the full synthetic "high millage" oil is gonna be pretty similar.

Its an automatic! Does Red Line have an oil you recommend for an AT?

Red Line makes great stuff but I cant speak to the specifics of the auto trans in these. I am sure others will chime in.

Valvoline MaxLife ATF for the win.

Toyota recommends using Dexron-III ATF. Switch to any other fluid, even one that's supposedly "better" and you might start getting some funky shifts

I would imagine that depends on how well maintained the trans has been over the years. If all of the friction material from the clutches is suspended in the current ATF any change will be pretty interesting especially with an old truck with unknown history.

All the new Dex's are backward compatible....

its the Jeeps and Chryslers that are the weird ones....

Its that 'kick down cable' thats hyper sensitive...

I moved mine couple more inches away from the headers.....so I didnt cook the lube out...
    and the empire striked back....

I carefully wrapped some 24mm silicone split hose jacket around it...for insulation....
    and gently put it back....

that cable is so important I bought me a brandnew oem backup for the inevitable day.. $110.........I keep it next to the new vapor canister I bought for $100 off forums here...

It's my understanding that Toyota only offered the Prerunners with an automatic transmission.

Nice truck. I use Castro extended life oil that has done well.
