Chromoly is a steel alloy. Chrome plating is completely different.

Were there any videos of the TRD Off-road? Anyone see if the upgraded packages for it include different UCAs? I know the Pro and Trail hunter have them but was curious if the OR had a set too.

From what I saw. The off-road model was an afterthought. The TacomaBeast dude had it briefly in the last 10 minutes or so of his review or whatever we are calling these videos.

I didn’t see anyone do a full segment on it other than Jeff but his was a manual trans.

It was hidden in the middle of the price list. Surprised they did a SR5 trim if it.

Did the opposite, more I watch the more I don’t want one, mainly since no access cab and price for the trim I want might as well step up to a 1/2 Ton. Which I kinda knew already. Believe there are going to be heavily discounted Tundra’s in a year (can already see it happening) get more truck for less.

Join the Tundra Facebook groups, you will see a motor blown post pretty much every other day, sometimes every day and on occasion multiple times.

IMO there is enough smoke to be cautious about that powertrain, until they spit out a year or two when you don't see that issue. What is difficult is that the engines are failing at different mileages, so there is really no way to determine if you have a good one or not without putting on the miles and hoping for the best.

The waste gate issue was solved pretty quick and they narrowed down the batch of bad parts...the engine failure issue has not been so simple. The Tacoma does not have the same waste gate set up a the Tundra so I don't see that particular issue as a concern.

You realize the same thing happened with the turbo waste-gate yet as I found out only 100 or so have been replaced. Just saying things are purposely blown out of proportion for clicks or malicious reasons. because = internet.

It should be slotted as less if they follow traditional pricing brackets.

Toyota was pretty quick to say they tracked down the issue with the wastegate as a parts supplier issue. As far as I know they have no answer or are just going to ride it out on the engine failures. Its hard to believe they don't know what the issue is....for me to have confidence in the Tundra (which I really would like to) it would be nice to know that the issue was corrected and should not be an issue going forward.

Since so far they seem to be keeping all info close to the vest, the only thing I can do is wait until 2024 models start getting 20-50K on them with no reports of engine failure. (other than normal one offs that occur)

For me, larger does not mean more. Having to back into parking spaces with a full size truck and only having a few inches to squeeze out of it when parked in the garage makes the truck less enjoyable to drive. Obviously if I had to haul a lot of stuff on a regular basis I would have different priorities.

Yes, like the 3.5 V6 being underpowered, guess it got so blown out proportion via the internet that Toyota built a whole new engine, that has unknown reliability at this point in time.

Dunno…think the V6 is fine, and like a lot of the “issues” with the 3rd Gen are blown way out of proportion. Think majority of the complaints are from people that bought Tacomas coming from the Sports Sedan segment.

I remember the old 20/22R days, not much complaints we just drove them until the wheels fell off.

Yeh, no car company wants bad PR and Toyota must need to reach a certain threshold before a recall or TSB is issued. Or their hand is forced by a state or federal entity.

Hey the 4G-4T even non hybrid made this issue moot hopefully. But not everyone can be satisfied...

I think the same thing. the V6 is fine for the truck and if you have a MT its even better. The whole Automatic Transmission programming is what messed up the whole powertrain but the engine is reliable and good as the 1GR.
if you want slow drive a hilux with the 22R engine , there you will see slow but that thing is bulletproof .
I like the new truck but is it 10k more valuable than the current Gen. Don't think so. Also the MPG on the new Gen is nothing to hit home run about. is only 1 mpg better at best. Yes you are getting more pick up and midrange torque and more bell and whistles that most people don't use or care about but at the expense of reliability , Again only time will tell on this new gen but i am not willing to be the guinea pig on a turbo this time.

    My 2 cents

Parking seems to be biggest problem for most. Don’t have that issue here. Almost bought a 1/2 ton last go around. Could really use more room at times as I get a little frustrated with the size of the bed for all my gear, and that is the 6’. Those 5’ beds make little sense to me, yet they are the most popular.
