My truck averaged 25 MPG for the first 633 miles....It was all highway miles none over 65mph most around 55-60. That was the drive back home from the dealer. It now averages 22 mpg per tank mostly short trips. Like others have said, it's brand new and still under warranty take it back to the dealer.

The very first 4th Gen complaint will be flooded with 5 pages of 3rd Gen owners haw-hawing it up before the thread gets shut down.

And then the same will happen again when the very first 4th gen owner comes up with the first stupid "how do I turn on the headlights" thread.

There have been many of us quietly waiting for that moment. It's the moment when we are no longer the freshmen.

I think we have hit the limit of what a truck with any sort of decent HP can get MPG wise unless it is hybrid. The physics aren't in its favor.

I bought a manual turbo 4 cylinder car to wait on the 4th gen. The 3rd gen is a good truck, but it did not please me.

Here’s something constructive: Pack your shit. Get in your truck. Go. Put over 56k miles on it in 7 months. Final destination Buenos Aires Argentina. Get used to the quirks. Forget about a full size as it will never make it in most of these places. Drive it. It’s not a dog. It needs generous use if the skinny pedal. The engine was designed to be run at higher rpms. You don’t need a lift but you better have some damn good mud terrains. Enjoy the truck.

And if you happen to live in Colorado and feel like bitching about elevation and now the Tacoma is a dog, try coming to Peru. Visited La Rinconada at over 16k ft and a highway another 1500 feet higher than that. Taco did fine.

Or keep bitching about it like a lot if people on here do and don’t do anything about it. Then you’ve wasted your money. If you use it, you will appreciate it. But you have to make it yours first. I’m glad I did.

Might be decision time: pick one: mileage or performance. Since mileage is never going to be great, re-gear the truck to 5.29 gears. You’ll pick up a few miles in-town and give it up on the highway. People who’ve re-geared say that it helps with the gear-hunting. Done. Next, get the pedal commander. These two changes may be all you need. Next step would be a tune. I would tune after your warranty period.

    Help me understand something.

You posted the top message on October 24 saying it had 5600 miles on it and you liked it so far. Said you bought it in March. Seven months and all is good.

You posted the second one today saying you had 5600 miles and it was a dog.

What happened with no additional miles being driven? How is it now a dog after a good seven months?

Then you post that the truck ran fine for a few days after you bought it but started going downhill. This contradicts your original welcome post to TW where you have a happy 5600 miles.

You posted this in another discussion:

“…when hunting the mountains and vast prairies of Montana. Have found that these easily drain into the fuel tank having removed the outboard connector. I plug the hose with gas resistant plastic caps. This is so easy to bring extended range fuel.
I am towing a 14’ UKANCAMP trailer for out back adventures. of Montana.”

Then you talk about towing again:

“ These came from the factory on my new Tacoma TRD. Are they worth a Damn? I am not doing any heavy off-road or towing. Truck will be hunted in the mountains but not real rough terrain. Just gauging whether to swap out the rear shocks at the moment. Will eventually be adding Timbren overload bags for towing and more. MTG”

Can’t be that much of a dog if you’re towing in Montana.

You also stated today that your pathfinder can run circles around the Tacoma. Where was all this talk in October when you said all was good.?

Smells like a fish taco to me.

No, wait, it just hit me… you’re trying to outdo the “sick of people approaching me about my truck” thread.

I’ll stick to the fish, cause something isn’t right here….

I took my Taco in for the 5,000 mile service at around 5,500 miles. After the service, the truck was driving like crap/new and mileage dropped. It’s slowly improving, so maybe there’s a factory-programmed re-learn around the 5K mark.

Like others have said - the factory tune, well, it sucks. And Toyota shoulda, coulda, oughta done a lot of stuff different. Anyway…

Option 1 - Adapt and overcome. (Stomp it, use Sport/ECT, re-tune…)
Option 2 - Tape a marshmallow to the skinny (gas) pedal and attempt to beat the TW gas mileage record.
Option 3 - Sell the truck and hope that government mandates and California propositions will eventually generate the perfect vehicle.
