Baja California is looking pretty sweet, aside from the cartel and shit.

I check the forecast daily, sometimes more, just hoping for snow and enough ice on the lakes to get the trails opened up. With the weather we’ve been experiencing, I’m not hopeful that we’ll be snowmobiling before mid to late January. I put more miles on the sled in two months than I do on the bike(s) all summer. The bike is fun to ride into town once in a while on errands or to grab a few groceries, but that’s about the extent of my interest in motorcycling. I spend the majority of the year waiting for this:

I have a complicated relationship with flying. I do it for a living, and recreationally. Somewheres north of 17000 hours of my life as of the last time I updated my log book. I very much dislike flying as a passenger though. I’m not afflicted with the travel bug. The entire airport experience is just miserable. And being crammed shoulder to shoulder, flighting with the person next to you for the armrest, being served half a can of ginger ale and a bag of pretzels every two hours just sucks. If time is no factor, I much prefer loading up the dogs and hitting the road in truck.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
So my buddy wants to try out the 2 stroke today ;)
I had a Leo Vince on an SV that I think sounded really nice. No pops or bs, just a smooth deeper sound. You knew you had a pipe when you got on it. They make a sweet exhaust, and most certainly lighter than stock.

oh definitely. I would love one too, just not for the prices they're going for currently. possibly down the line once they hype dies down.

Same. I'm honest enough to realize virtually anything i've bought for my BMW was a personal want. Shit, the bike is basically a race bike. You think I needed a brake lever guard for my one track venture? lol. but it looks cool and i had the money to blow

I get what you are saying, and generally it applies, but tires I feel are one thing that's perfectly okay to overspend on. Maybe I'm biased because I thought the same as you, and suffered at the track for it. But yeah. Plus there's just something about having really well-performing tires...idk if you've ever ridden a grippy set but it's a world of difference both in performance and riding confidence, both of which play a big part in staying alive on two wheels IMO. And my definition of "grippy" is still tied to DOT rubber lol

add me to the list, I'll bring my guns and we can pool ours

    brother....

i just heard back yesterda from my guy at the shop...bmw valve service and very basic maintenance will be almost $1k. Meanwhile, upgrading and replacing a whole bunch of shit on the R3 (wiring harness included) pretty much from the ground up, will cost me a grand total of $3k lol.

Lets just say I'm very glad I decided to go lower displacement than keep tracking the BMW lol.

If it were me in your shoes, I'd go for the Ninja, it'll ride more differently than your supermoto compared to the CBR. It's also cheaper which means more money for other stuff.

Just stay responsible with that wrist lol

Y'know I've just about had it with this slander

    Nailed it.

I put my bike away for heavy rain and that's about it.

Touching on the snow convo...I love the snow. i've been to the snow more times than I've been to the beach over the last 3 years. and I live 1 mile from the beach lol.

Isn't southern UT heavily mormon and also mostly dry? As in no alcohol sales

Climate and moto laws are great, i also own 6 guns and a stockpile of ammo. And I can walk to a liquor store at any time during business hours and snag a bottle of tequila.

I remember being so confused in other states because you can’t buy liquor at the grocery store like you can in California.

Was this from a dealer? $1k is pretty reasonable! My friend was quoted $2-3k for his valve adjustment and service and I decided to stop looking at S1000XRs after that.

PS, the more people hate on California, the less likely they are to move here and make things even more crowded. As it is I wish all these tech bros would GTFO.

You raise valid points there. Better to have tires that out grip you than to out ride the grip of your tires.

True friends stab you in the front. :)

I'm honestly not sure if it's dry or not. I don't drink so I've never bothered to check anywhere for that particular bit. As for "heavily Mormon", that would be akin to saying CA is heavily non-members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Just different kinds of people, and regardless of faith, gender, ethnicity, age, etc. you will find angels and assholes among all groups.

For funsies I did pull up the composition by faith in CA and UT (can't pull by regions from what I found) and it's not super different if you don't separate Christianity out into separate groups. 63% Christian with 28% Unaffiliated in CA, and the remainder being Non-Christian Faiths. UT is 73% Christian, 27% Unaffiliated, with the remainder being Non-Christian Faiths. CA just swaps out halve the "Mormons" for Evangelical Protestants is all.

Info pulled from Pew Research Center

Lol I don't travel much in the USA, mostly international, so my first multi-state road trip (not counting vegas trips) was quite a learning experience.

I'm not a huge casual drinker, so it didn't bother me, but my gf then was a big beer drinker, and so frustrated when we found out coming into Utah that alcohol sales wasn't really a thing outside of restaurants in the cities we visited.

Not a dealer, just my usual guy I have handle everything anything major on this bike. Yeah he's very fairly priced and turns stuff around quick. that $2-3k quote sounds about right for the dealers...if the bike was still within warranty I'd take it to a dealer but as it is, I can't justify the cost lol. It's also nice to support a small business and build a relationship with him.

Important to note, the $1k quote is just for checking the valves. I'm sure it would be more if they needed adjusting, but considering they were still well within spec when I bought the bike a year and a half ago, I'm hoping they won't need much if any adjustment this time around.

Yeah very true, we don't need any more transients. Bay Area and LA have enough to fill the state lol.

I did a little research myself, so it's not totally dry but most of the middle of the state is very dry, 4 counties with no bars but booze at restaurants, 7 completely dry cities, and the majority of liquor dispensing businesses are in Salt Lake County.

    https://www.sltrib.com/news/2018/09/02/facts-about-bars-booze/

As far as the Mormon thing, i wasn't saying that to say anything bad about Mormons, just a consideration that it may affect your lifestyle/interactions with people there. But like you said that applies anywhere, so it's personal case-by-case basis. Obviously that would hardly be a consideration if you're Mormon lol.

Huh. I had no idea there were still dry areas of the country. :notsure:

Still, the statement is a headscratcher to me. Just as if someone didn't want to live in a place that wasn't predominantly of their faith/non-faith. If it's a complete lifestyle ruling faith like Mennonites or Amish I could see it impacting interactions; but for most, unless they are engaging in a religious conversation, someone's faith has little to do with my daily interactions with them. I'm more concerned with whether or not they are assholes than if they are or are not members of any given faith.

I'd be more concerned about feeling like an outcast in their community, the specific faith is whatever. I'd say the same about moving to a largely muslim, jewish, hindu, buddhist, etc community. Or for example with Mormons, it will rub some the wrong way for talking to a female who is not your wife, or someone else's wife, for too long. I've been to both Egypt and China where I clearly don't belong and it isn't fun to deal with in my opinion.

I prefer a melting pot personally, rather than a one dimensional community. If any one faith is predominant, that melting pot isn't so diverse anymore.

Again, it's not to say anything bad about Mormons or their faith. Just my 2 cents.

Uh... You've been around weird "mormons."

I understand being an outsider, but I think that primarily applies in a huge majority (80%+) setting or small population setting. Utah, for example is 55% Members, but that means there are effectively as many non-members as there are members. Put that in the scale of the SLC meto area population of 1.2-1.3M people and you're far from alone as nearly half are not part of that faith. If you are ok in CA, which is mostly Christian, you'd be ok in UT which is also mostly Christian.

You would have to give up the CA weather though.

Lol maybe I have. My experience with them has been that they're fairly tribal. Not necessarily to my detriment but it was apparent they preferred the company of fellow LDS members, and looked down on me and others for not living their same lifestyle/sharing their faith. I'd wonder though, sure the percentages are the same, but what about the vigilance? 55% comprised of hypervigilant members in Utah would be a lot worse than 55% comprised of very laid back/nonpracticing Christians in CA. But that's just speculation and conjecture.

I also don't think I'd move to SLC, my preferred areas would be those boonies that will probably be less diverse lol. And yeah giving up CA weather would be tough for me...I like visiting the snow, not living in it lol. Nevermind the overall much higher elevation, meaning our cars and bikes loose efficiency (less so if turbo'd).

Overall, I love CA (or I guess I should say San Diego, many places in CA I wouldn't live either), perks and negatives all considered. Could definitely see that changing depending how the state govt goes from here, but at the moment it's acceptable. CCW laws are loosening, handgun and "Assault" weapon laws are being fought back against, motorcycle laws are arguably the best in the country, the moto community is great, lots of offroading, etc.

Also feel like CA is one of those states you can only really love if 1) you grew up here 2) you make fuck you money and lean left politically, or 3) you're a total hippie/stoner. Maybe that's just my opinion, but that's also been my experience with people who love living here.

    Anywho's.

I'm determined to mount the aux light I had on the Navi (that I took off before I sold it) onto the BMW this weekend. Wish me luck. With the daylight saving change it's now dark here at 4pm and anything I can do for visibilities sake. Should be a good excuse to break out the welder and make a little bracket or something.

That got me down a rabbit hole of power distribution hubs because this'll be the 5th thing I have on my battery post I think? (SAE harness, afxied, heated seat, normal battery cable currently) and thats too damn many. Anyone know of a SPOD-like thing for motorcycles that isn't $200+? I'm debating just running like a mini blue sea fuse block or something.

There's a significant amount of that 55% who are not considered active, which means they are laid back. That'd be the category I fall under, though I'm not in Utah. Part of why I'm not active is because I've seen the hypocritical holier than thou types as well, but I promise you, that's not the way it's supposed to be. As I frequently tell others, Please don't judge my faith by the idiots who practice it. :D

All of our opinions are. How else would we form an opinion? Don't take my comments as hostile or anything either. I really was just enjoying the talk and trying to understand where your opinion came from.

Definitely didn't take it as hostile, all good! Also didn't realize you were LDS (i think, unless i misunderstood your previous post) lol sorry if I offended by using the term Mormon, i know some take offense to that.

RE: opinions....well just come to CA and see how many people form opinions on things with no experience lol but that's a convo for another day
