2024 Early Technical Information

Just thought I'd go ahead and post some preliminary information for all those folks out there who crave it. In no particular order, and likely only covering what will be built in the first few months.

For what it's worth, the sources of this data are early release, so it may not be completely correct for all models that will be built, etc. It's purely informational.

Chassis Codes:
TZNA40: 2WD Non-Hybrid with Coil Springs
TZNA41: 2WD Non-Hybrid with Leaf Springs (8AT)
TZNA45: 4WD Non-Hybrid with Coil Springs (8AT and 6MT TRD) or Leaf Springs (6MT excl. TRD)
TZNA46: 4WD Non-Hybrid with Leaf Springs
TZNH47: 4WD Hybrid

The engine is a T24A-FTS

Fuel Octane Requirement: 87 or Higher (up to E15)
Fuel Tank Size: 69 L

Alternator Output: 130 A, 150 A, or 180 A (depending on options)

Starter Power: 1.4 kW (without Start/Stop system) or 1.7 kW (with Start/Stop system)

Oil Type: 0W-20
Oil Filter Type: Spin-on

6-Speed Manual Transmission is RC60F (4WD) (Previously used in Hilux and Hiace, similar to RC62F used in the

8-Speed Automatic Transmissions are AL80E (2WD), AL80F (4WD Non-Hybrid), and L580F (4WD Hybrid) (New transmissions)

The differential gear ratios are 3.583 (A/T) and 4.300 (M/T)

The front differential size is 8.0"
The rear differential size is 9.5" (Hybrid and TRD M/T, same as 2022+ Tundra), the Non-Hybrid A/T and non-TRD M/T is smaller (8.2")

The transfer case is a VF2DM or VF4CM type (similar to previous Tacoma)

The clutch pedal is metal, not plastic

TRD, some Limited, and all Hybrid models have larger front brakes, all rear brakes are the same size, all use an electric parking brake

A card key is available for the smart key system, will save people from trying to make Lexus ones work, haha

EDIT (2023-12-08) Several new updates:

Differential sizes updated

Small front brakes have 319 x 28 mm rotors with 4x 45.4 mm pistons.
Large front brakes have 340 x 32 mm rotors with 4x 48.1 mm pistons.
Rear brakes have 309 x 18 mm rotors with 1x 44.45 mm (non-Hybrid) or 48.1 mm (Hybrid) piston.
A 23.81 mm (non-Hybrid) or 26.99 mm (Hybrid) master cylinder is used.
A conventional (non-Hybrid) or hydraulic (Hybrid) brake booster is used.

Both automatic and manual transmissions have brake hold and hill start assist.

The RC60F in the 2024 Tacoma has the same length input shaft as the RC62F in the 2016-2023 Tacoma, so with a bellhousing swap, it should be a bolt-on for a 2005-2023 Tacoma engine.

Vehicle uses an air-to-air intercooler, unlike most T24A-FTS applications which use air-to-water.

Information on when the engine uses which injectors:

A/T SR models use solid engine mounts, all others use liquid-filled mounts.

Electric power steering is used, steering rack actuated.

Lug nut torque: 97 lbf-ft (Aluminum Wheels)/154 lbf-ft (Steel Wheels)

The hood, bed side panels, and tailgate skin are aluminum, the rest of the body is steel.

A Bluetooth key system using your smart phone is available.

Any specific differences for the full time 4WD limited?

 

Wonder why they went back to the old style metal spin on engine oil filters?

 

Toyota gas been going back to spin-ons for the last 10’ish years. Not entirely sure on the reasons for the decision.

I would find it odd that the Auto trucks would have a smaller rear axle. The 16-23 manuals had lower gearing, but the same axle.

If it is true the manuals are getting a beefier rear axle and the auto trans being a new unit with unknown reliability, it makes the manual option that much more appealing.

 

Glad to see a lot of people's favorite is returning!

Wonder how well that will hold up in corrosion land? I know lots of other marquees are already there, but am unaware of any good or bad news on the topic.

Does it include a dipstick?

 

The rear diff on the I-force Max is a 9.5". That's what Sheldon was saying at the Flagstaff event.

 

Do you know if the full time 4WD Limited will have an ADD or a fully live front diff?

 

Yeah, I didn’t include any hybrid info.

My apologies. So top tier non hybrids are getting a 180amp alternator? Thats very promising to see! I did hear Sheldon say they upgraded those to power more accessories. I assumed the top offering you listed was I-Force max. Thank you.

 

Yes, others have ADD.

Yes, 180 A is the highest for non-Hybrid.

That isn’t new, the 16-23 manuals got the larger 8.75” diff compared to the autos 8.0” diff unless the autos were TRD Off-Road or Pro, in which case they’d get the locking 8.75”.

My guess it’s related to shock loading. Easier to shock load the driveline with a manual because of the direct connection and potential to shock load it hard via dropping the clutch.

 

I remember reading something about the front diff being a 9” to account for the extra torque.

 

On the hybrid it will likely have larger differentials, but hybrid production is starting later, so less information is available.

Maybe because they are tired of poning up for motors after techs can't put an o-ring on correctly. Just saying... Probably has cost them millions over the last 10 yrs. You got bigger problems immediately when you don't have spin on correctly, or not at all!

 

All the videos I've seen of the 24 Tacoma's engine bay doesn't have an engine cover. Is there a reason for this?

All other applications with the same engine - highlander, crown and lexus models have one. Just wondering if there is a reason for this.

I'm pretty sure I remember watching somewhere that one of the vehicles with it actually helped with air flow or something.

 

If I’m not mistaken the manual tranny non-hybrid was supposed to have the hybrid (beefy 9”) front diff. I was quite excited because the entire drivetrain is really overbuilt for the manual, made to handle the huge torque of hybrid drive in 4LO.

 

Well, it doesn’t.
