Really?? I hardly believe that because it sounds like it would be a huge design flaw. So you snag just one wheel sensor (easily done on a branch or ice), and then you lose not only traction control but ALL brake assist? Do you have the EWD to substantiate this claim? I mean it is in theory possible to route power for the booster thru a shared ABS fuse but I highly highly doubt it

There’s a big difference between removing all power from a system and breaking a single component of the system.

From someone who suffered brake problems after my original lift, I can attest. I’ve pulled the fuse to get out of the bush, and the braking is pretty much Nil. You can pump all you want and you are not stopping without using the hand brake.

I've anticipated using the handbrake in the taco while moving as I've done on other vehicles; does anyone have insight on the handbrake workings?

In my previous vehicles with proper handbrake, pulling the handbrake adds friction to the rear wheel via the brake pads. The more you pull, the more friction until eventually you get to the tires locking.

In the Tacoma, the handbrake appears to lock-up even under light applications. Almost like there is a.pawl being engaged.

Now I've only done incidental testing. And I've laid off of it while moving so far. (It is always used for parking)
I'm wondering if anyone has played with their handbrake in their taco for purposes other than parking.

The handbrake pulls on cables that pull on the shoes. It can be modulated, but with an empty bed it doesn’t take much to lock up the rear.

They’re much better options than disabling ABS

My new 1993 S-10 Blazer would coast thru intersections making awful noises and one time going on thru, when the left tires were on dry pavement with the right snow covered, very scary. The service manager said, "grip the steering wheel with both hands and continue to push, push hard on the brake pedal like you're going to drive the pedal thru the floor"... I.M.O. newer antilock brakes for 90% of the people will stop a vehicle quicker, for those of us in the snowy north who grew up learning to apply as much pressure as possible to the point of almost locking the tires this will give the shortest stopping distance.

If, I remember correctly, my new 1989 Silverado pickup would disable the ABS in 4wd.

My ‘95 4Runner with only rear mechanical ABS like yours did the same thing- the worse time was driving on snowy freeway in Utah at 65mph and a snowplow turned onto the highway with a pack of cars approaching at that same speed. Utahans drive too fast when it snows and it would have been unsafe to drive any slower than they on the freeway!

I had to brake so hard my front wheels were locking up without pulsing which meant a much longer stopping distance. I was Ok but some of the cars that were around me weren’t- they slid all over the place.

The newer ABS is all-wheel and computer controlled- it does work very well. Try it out on a good place and really push it to see for yourself.

I've driven through many Michigan winters with and without ABS. Having ABS is much preferred, especially when you have a good traction control system.

When you start sliding without ABS, what are you doing anyway? Pumping the pedal. ABS does that faster than you can and you can still let off and reapply if you so choose. If you are driving properly, the chances ABS ever activates in the first place are pretty small aside from when you hit unexpected ice.

Disabling the ABs through logic, and pulling the fuse that feeds the braking system, which in the case of a TRD OR kills power to the electric brake booster, are two different things. On the Sport and Sr5, with the vacuum booster it is likely different. The tacos disable abs in certain 4x4 modes as well, but the system is not powered down.

Anyone with a TRD OR who doesn’t believe me is welcome to pull that fuse. Just don’t roll through an intersection, over a group of nuns sitting at the bus stop, and over a cliff into the ocean, then blame me. You were warned.

I agree with most everything you wrote. My issue is that 99.999% of people fall into your "pedal mashers" category, even if they think they're awesome. So if a random person says hey, I can out drive 99.9999% of people I'm not gonna believe that unless they send me their resume as a world renowned rally driver. Until then, I'm gonna suggest not defeating a safety device unless they are offroad and just playing around.

And yes, I know "it's possible to control a vehicle safely with sliding with the gas/brake". Growing up riding sport ATVs hanging the rear out was the fun part, and that transferred over to driving my first truck, which had no TCS. I've hit icy intersections too fast and nearly spun out and simply gassed it through til I was straight again, my passengers thought I was an amazing driver. But I don't let that go to my head. I'm just a better driver than my passengers. I should have simply never been in that situation and been driving appropriately for conditions, which I thought I was until I wasn't.

OP, I'm sure is a WAY better driver on snow and ice then me, he's got boatloads more experience in those conditions. But that doesn't automatically make him the 1 in 1 million.

For me, I've found the best thing on snow and ice is to simply NOT brake. Even in my automatic, shifting down and using engine braking to slow me down instead of touching the pedal until I'm almost stopped. Obviously gotta plan ahead, as it takes awhile, but that's just driving for the conditions. And that's just my way of not relying on Brakes/ABS. There's prolly better ways to do it *shrugs*, but I'm not a professional driver.

Like the guy in the lifted 4x4 Bronco that passed my dad (driving on chains at 25-30 in a 50, in a 2wd ford ranger). My dad found him two corners later upside down in the sheriff's front yard
