My point was why put a high torque engine in a truck if it isn’t going to increase towing capacity?

I also like to see what I can get for the same money. Did cross shop a Subaru Outback Wilderness, Tacoma and F250 when I was shopping. All could be had for $40K. The F250 was slightly used and my buddy works at Ford.

The ol’ “the bigger they are, the harder they fall…” comes to mind.

That layout is very nice. We are looking at inTech, Oliver, and Airstreams. All have models in the 3500 lbs dry range. They might be too small though as we might kill each other. She lived on the road for 3 years in a 14 footer when she was younger with her mother and two siblings, said it would be fine…I am not so sure of it, kinda want something that we could go at either end to get some space, one area to sleep while the other for work.

Kinda liking the inTech O-V-R Navigate, and the Airstream Trade Wind. Bit above the Tacomas capabilities though. Real close to the layout of the trailers you posted.

Keep in mind the Nissan is Direct injection only as well vs. dual port like the Toyota. Other than simplicity, it doesn't seem like much of a fight IMO even excluding the MAX power options.

Lots of complaints and angst over wanting and expecting these trucks for duties they are not intended to perform. Seems silly.

Yeah you're still high as a kite to claim the hybrid Tacoma has 18,000 lb.-ft. of torque to the wheels.

The Cybertruck actually has 600 hp for the AWD, 845 hp for the Cyberbeast trim, with a torque of 7,435 lb.-ft. for the AWD, 10,296 lb.-ft. for the Cyberbeast.

The Tacoma hybrid has 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft.

BEV's also don't have torque curves, 100% of that power is available at any time.

A Tacoma hybrid will likely be around ~$48k I'm guessing? The Cybertruck with $7500 federal tax credit would be ~$52k.

Not complaining. Just cross shopping. Like to see what I get for the same money, Subaru wasn’t quite enough cargo room and the F250 was a bit overkill, plus rides horribly for a daily. Each would have worked for me, all get similar gas mileage. Buddy’s Suby gets 19-20 towing the same trailer I have, my buddy’s F250 gets 17-18, my Tacoma gets 19-20. So OTD price and gas mileage was splitting hairs.

The Tacoma was the Goldilocks in the middle choice for me. Probably why they are wildly popular among buyers.

i think the opposite. He was right waiting. He wanted to wait for better battery tech and sub 15-minute charging or sub 10 min charging and longer range. He was right to me.

Nah they wasted hundreds of millions of dollars into R&D of useless hydrogen because he was so disconnected. He was a 65+ year old dinosaur that couldn't keep up with the fast moving tech advancements of modern times and as a result was properly ousted. He stated in his own resignation letter that him being removed will help speed up Toyota's transition to EVs, connected cars, and digitalization. He wasn't waiting for anything.

I don't need to get into an armchair engineer argument here, but let me try to explain. Gears multiply torque. That 465 lbf-ft that the Taco makes is at the output of the engine/electric motor combo. It's transferred though a transmission, transfer case, and rear diff. It's multiplied though each depending on the gear ratio, and the gear ratio is quite high in low range. Now, I didn't take into account parasitic losses and tire diameter since I was simply trying to show how easy it is to inflate numbers. The Hummer EV marketing team did the same trick with the 11,000 lbf-ft torque value they reported. Read this article, since it also applies to the cyber truck.

I read somewhere that the hydrogen thing was in Toyotas 50-100 year plan. So presumably after EV’s wreck the planet with strip mining and toxic heavy metal waste. :crapstorm:

The Tacoma tows a lot of stuff just fine. Small bass boats, a medium sized utility trailer with a couple of ATV’s, or a lawn mower, motorcycle trailer, etc.

That's great but that's not what mid size trucks are geared for . Tow all you want but it's a lot harder on a midsize truck in the long run

Early on we were told that there is no one silver bullet to get us off fossil fuels. Still isn’t either, since each alternative has its pros and cons. I see Toyota sitting back and just waiting to see how it pans out.

I for one would have liked to see diesel, diesel hybrid run off of bio-fuels. And so did Toyota since they have it available in the European market. Hydrogen was a solution too since it isn’t using mass amounts of minerals, I can see why they invested so much into it.

Now with government seemingly totally onboard with battery EVs, don’t think manufacturers have a choice in the matter.
