went in for an alignment and tire rotation this morning. as big o tech reversed from the space i parked in, passenger side inner tie rod failed. snapped right off. the steering rack is new as of <10k miles ago. im glad this happened in a parking lot where it can be fixed and not on the highway or remote mountain pass. i drive like a grandpa so i suspect this is cheap parts and/or a bad install on the rack. have a warranty on the work for the rack so i will be going back to them with the broken piece to fight the good fight. new inner rods, moog, going in on both sides. happy friday ya'll!

A 'Toyoda' rack comes with new inners, why not just get the good stuff from the get go?

So it snapped while in tension......while drawing the knuckle back in...

out of curiousity....how old are upper/lower ball joints.....have those ever been replaced?

any chance those are binding up....

what motivated you to get an alignment in first place....were there any signs?

Thanks for posting...........this could win the post award of the week/month....
    don't see this everyday...

maybe ties with the jacked ignition........all in the same day...

    freaky Friday.....

hi o'silver, sorry for the lengthy delay in response

truck has been driving great since this occurred, including multiple long trips to/from moab, ski trips etc

though, continuing to find some front end toe in, inner tire wear

slight issue ive noticed since i purchased at 122k, been rotating tires every 5k or so to help mitigate

lower ball joints were replaced at 50k, per carfax reports, nothing noted for uppers

here we are at 150k, and going to have them looked at

maybe go with new ucas, see if that helps

found a good shop here in denver, adler automotive, only work on toyotas/lexus

    appt set for this week

Some guru members here say ‘check/inspect’ ball joints every other oil change
I would expect shop to advise to RR them….100k pushing limits for BJ’s

as far as tire rotation/wear pattern
    Assuming accelerated wear
    Likely outer tie rods

after inr tie failure, shop just RR’d r side inr tie or replaced more than just that part?

Yeah if you've got oem ball joints they should be good for 80k...

but if they're not oem.....I'd cut that number in half, at least....

this, the fuel pump, and ignition can send you walking.......worth a regular replacement schedule. for sure.

If you're at 150K, its worth replacing all the rubber bushings on the truck, and there's a lot........about 2yrs worth.
    .....counting rear wheel seals......

by taking care of all these you save a lot of wear and tear on all the surrounding parts....

did new inners and outers when it happened, both sides.

upper ball joints, originals, were just inspected and deemed in good shape.

noted on rubber bushings .. will look into. Thank you!

Did you happen to buy a NAPA replacement rack? Had one and found inner tie rod failure within 1k miles.
