Oil overfill problem

Hey all, I recently acquired a 2009 PreRunner Tacoma 2WD and I'm new to this site. I have a question you all can hopefully help me out with. I recently had some transmission problems and took my Tacoma into the local Toyota dealership, they said they filled the transmission fluid back up (because it was low) but i later found out that they also may have put an extra 4 Quarts of Oil in the engine. I found this out because I was checking the oil level and I noticed it was high, so I drained oil out until it read the correct level. There ended up being approximately 4 extra quarts of oil in my tank (9 Qts. in all.) I was wondering what the consequences are of driving with 9 Qts. of oil in your truck?

Did you ask them if they actually put oil in it?

 

Check your radiator coolant level?

 

I believe that this would cause an over compression problem in the crank case. It then in turn would cause piston blow by creating a really dense blue smoke. If this never happened, and you drained the oil, chances are you caught it before any damage could occur. so yeah, could cause a really bad situation.

 

I took it to the service center again today and they said they had billed out 4 quarts of tranny fluid. They have no idea how 4 extra quarts of oil got in it. The service manager said the same thing as above, I caught it quick enough so no damage was done. Bottom line: switching service centers and never going there again.

 

they billed out 4 qts of tranny fluid and you had 4 qts too much in the engine seems a bit strange. how can the tranny get 4 qts low unless you have a major leak? what did the oil look like you drained from the engine?

 

I would check the oil for red tint from tranny fluid. If it is discolored, I think i would opt for a complete oil and filter change. I would also send off a few ounces for analysis to see if they did the obvious and added the tranny fluid to the engine.

 

If it were me I'd drain all the engine oil out and add the correct amount back just to make sure of the level...these dip sticks are kinda hard to get an accurite reading some times. Also, switching service centers might help but if you really want to know what's being done do the fluid changes yourself.
I had my dealer do the rear and front differentials and transfer case fluids (wanted them to loosen the drain/fill plugs for the first time) and they charged me for 10qts of gear oil when it should have taken around 6 according to the owners manual. When I asked the service manager about it he just scrugged it off and said sometimes they take more...I was like wtf??

 

What a strange sequence of events. I would think if you were 4qts over full on your oil you would be hevily smoking out the exhaust. I'm just wondering if the parts dept. may have just made a mistake and billed out 4qts oil instead of the tranny fluid like the tech. requested and then just forgot to take it off of the repair order. And also being 4 qts low on trans fluid sounds like an issue to me.

 

Update: I took the Tacoma in to Toyota of Tampa Bay yesterday and left it over night to check the transmission level and told them about the overfilled oil. This morning they said the oil may have just been a mistake and that it was 3 Qts low on transmission fluid but they can't find a leak. They re-filled the tranny and sent me on my way. I drove back down to Ft. Myers (where I go to school) and I received a call from the Assistant Service manager saying that they forgot to put the fill plug back in the transmission... I don't know how that happens, but as someone stated above, I'm gonna start doing all the fluid changes myself.

 

I guess you have just found worst dealer ever,
one suggestion - call Toyota corporate put the complain and let them give you number in case your service screwed up something else

 

I could be wrong here, but my understanding is that due to the pressure created by the oil pump (needed to push oil throught the engine, and up through the filter), you can only get so much oil in the engine/oil pan. If it was indeed over-filled by 4 quarts, you likely would've had the oil fill cap blow off and oil shooting all over your engine bay.

My advice to you, drain your oil. Refill it.

 

Nah, oil pump is part of the same closed loop system so it does not care how much oil is in the oil pans. Oil pump will still pump the same and oil will be coming back to the bottom part of the engine the same way. The problem here is if you severely over fill and you make truck go up or down steep angle oil level will reach under the piston. Thats where the problems will start as oil does not compress. Most of the time engine feels like its pulling the 18 wheeler behind. Almost no power. If you really push it at that state something is going to give. Its almost like hydro locking from bottom up.

 

Yeah, the only problem I've heard of is that the piston rods would slap the oil if it was too full creating a frothing effect and making it so the bearings didn't get coated as they should have. I drained the entire engine immediately and did a full oil/ filter change. There wasn't any problems yet so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll stay that way.
