Tonneau Cover using existing rails?

Following on to my previous question ... I now wonder if they make covers that use the existing bed side rails. I would think that there could be panels that snap into the rails.

What do you know?

 

I have the extang 3.0 trifold and it uses the existing rails .

If you’re a cheapskate, tyger sells a roll up and a soft trifolds on Amazon but it looks like there’s a lot of different brands at that price point now. Both use accessory rails for install. I want to payoff and regear before I get a cap, so a $200 tonneau is perfect for my use until then.

Edit: just saw your last post. I’m doubtful you’re going to find anything that’s compatible with that thing. All the tonneaus I’ve seen or helped install need to lay on top of the bed rails which that chase thing is obscuring. There’s only a hand full of bed racks that are specifically designed to sit above the rails to allow tonneau installation.
I could be wrong though

 

I wonder if the chase rack could be removed, then tonneau cover installed and the rack installed on top of that.

 

I’m not familiar with the retrax from your other thread, but something like that which lays flush with the top of the bed rails and rests completely inside the bed is the only thing I can imagine working for you. This is all just speculation though…

 

Lomax also uses the existing rails and sits more over the bed than some others. You should call Luke at Truck Alterations to see what he says. I just ordered a lomax for the tacoma, but the one on my f250 still allows bed rails.

My '21 Taco came with a Toyota OEM soft cover that uses the existing rail system - a few sliding clips that go into the rails and then the cover attaches to those clips. I wanted a hard cover (still need to get rid of the soft cover) so I bought the Lomax (as posted above - from Luke, Truck Alterations) and I love it. You may actually be able to get this lomax to work in your situation (not sure). the Lomax is narrower up near the cab - so you might want to measure what width you have in your situation. For mine, the width at the cab is 57 7/8 inches. I have a '21 Sport with 6' bed. Hope that helps

 

Truxedo ProX15 utilizes the stock rails.

 

One thought is to make my own. What are the panels of something like the Bakflip made of. It says aluminum. I can only guess. Maybe to sheets of aluminum with a honeycomb spacer for strength?

Hi, fellow cheapskate here.

The tyger cover fits perfectly and holds up well to tough use. I honestly don't understand how people end up spending $1,000+ on these things.

 

I’m definitely happy with my roll up from them. The testimony that sold me was from a TW user who lives further north than me and hadn’t had any issues after 3 years. They see -20f for weeks at a time and get significantly more snow than where I’m at. If dude was satisfied, I figured I would be too.
I’m on my 2nd winter and no complaints so far

Thanks! I went with Peragon specifically because of their compatibility with BillieBars rack system. Wanted to be able to haul kayaks while still having secure lockable bed storage.

 

Are the panels easily removable?

 

I keep seeing comments about tonneau covers that use the existing rails when they really don't. Any tonneau cover that comes with it's own rails that mounts to the existing rails doesn't count. Bakflip is the worst. You have to remove the OEM rails, mount their rails in the OEM rails' place them mount the OEM rails to the bakflip rails. I feel Xzibit should really be their spokesperson.



The cheapo hard cover I just bought uses the existing rails as in, you slide 3 small brackets down each side and it mounts to them. It's the main reason I bought it. The Extang is basically the same cover with better clamps and costs a bit more.
