First oil change at 600 miles supposed to be this dirty?

I have 3 toyotas in garage at the moment. All 3 are on 10k oci since day 1. On one of them I had to teardown the engine to fix Toyota's mistake. I found no visible issues with 10k oci. Just do whatever tickles your bone...

 

Why don't try and use a car care nut video of a Tacoma engine that has oil issues? I know why you don't... Because there's none. That video you linked is about a 4cyl Toyota engine that had oil issues on that model of engine. He may be a good mechanic, but his goal is getting views to generate income.

 

It's normal, your second oil change at 600 miles should be cleaner.

Haha yeah my only previous truck was a 2002 Ford Ranger 4WD Manual that I used from 30k - 150k miles over 18 years. Uncharted territory here owning a new truck! After reading through some of the other threads seems like many folks have funky oil in their first couple changes.

 

Why has everyone ignored the OP’s finding of metal shavings in his catch can? That is not normal. I just did first time oil change in daughter’s 24 Corolla with 900 miles. The oil was no where as dark as his and there were no metal shavings.

Correct.
There is no special break in a while Toyota uses. Toyota uses the same engine oil coming out of the factories that do dealerships.

40+ years ago vehicles would come out of the factory with breaking oil. The only thing special about the oil was it was a non-detergent. This “break-in oil” ideology went out when they stopped using cast-iron piston rings.

 

small bits of metal, and what not are actually rather common and a new engine. Most are normally found the oil filter media. Sometimes there’s some in the pan. It’s all part of the manufacturing and assembly process.

I’ve seen in an automotive diesel engines and actually aircraft engines.

 

If I recall mine was the same . I didn’t do it that early I did mine at the recommended intervals. Toyota might be adding some kind of additive to the oil for break in is my thought why it comes out looking like that . After the first oil change it has been nice and clean looking .

 

My oil looked like yours too at my first oil change. It also smelled like gas. I’ve sent in two oil samples to Blackstone and both have come back normal. I specifically asked about fuel dilution when sending my samples in and they have told me twice that nothing is wrong. I saw someone mention loose spark plugs from the factory. I haven’t checked mine yet but I’m hoping to get around to it soon. Maybe check yours? Here is a pic of my latest oil analysis

Evidently you are concerned. I would change it again at 1500 miles for peace of mind. I would also pull the filter media apart and look for large pieces of metal. If you now feel comfortable, change it again at 5000 miles and then set an OCI that you think is suitable.

 

That pic is worth 1000 words of me telling people to do their first oil change early to get rid of the leftover machining swarf and break in metal bits.

I change the initial oil early in every fossil fueled engine I have ever bought from new. It's cheap insurance for what can be a many thousands of dollars engine replacement after the warranty has expired.

Even a ZT mower engine is often a couple thousand dollar repair nowadays. $10-$15 for a filter and oil is still cheap. [25-10 hours depending on if a filter or non filter, the sparkles can be amazing in quantity]

I will also add, low tension oil control rings/rings seem to be far more susceptible to seizure/sticking due to the longevity of modern oil changes and build up then engines of yore.

 

Awesome to see an oil analysis. I used to do oil analyses when I was part of other car forums and got into debates on "when to change oil". Far too many people still cry wolf at 5K oil changes during normal driving conditions.

Edit: I was looking at your numbers. If your silicon levels do not change, you might wanna change to another air filter brand as your current air filter may not be stopping dirt ingestion. Silica is naturally present in dirt and is harder than steel. This will definitely destroy your engine over time and reduce compression.

 

did you ask your oompa loompas? i suspect one of them is attempting to off you by 'gumming up' the works.

maybe try paying them in more than candy.

 

It could also be that the higher silica content was from casting and not all completely removed when the block and such were prepped and machined.

 

international/cummins have had a ton of issues with that lately. just had 2 trucks with less than 500 miles on them throwing some pretty violent codes for "STOP MOTOR" because the motors weren't clean enough from the sandcasting process, and the debris is breaking loose after it leaves the factory and either plugging things up, or grinding the bearings apart...

 

Changed mine at 1500 in Jan 2023. Was still clear with fine metal particulates in the bottom.

Now sitting at 64871 miles. Used any viscosity and oil brand I could find since leaving the US. Some synthetic some dino. Some changes are darker than others but not by much.

O/20 to 10/50. And a lot has been a mix of brands and viscosities because it is literally all I could find. Hell I think in Colombia I changed it and had different brands different viscosities and a mix of synth and dino all at once. It’s all worked.

Engine still runs smooth and strong, Even at over 15k feet in Peru.

Oil is supposed to get dirty. It’s how the dirt is kept in suspension that gets inside your engine.

Just keep changing it. Regularly. And don’t get so caught up in oil change nirvana that you forget about the other fluids.
