Hi guys. I had buried the gas gauge to near empty. Filled up almost with $80. Turn Tacoma on and gas gauge reads zero and the yellow indicator light is out as well. Weird I’m thinking. Restart. Same. Figured I’d look into this at work hoping a fuse issue.
Next morning on way to work on cruise control doing 76mph motor shuts off at precisely 9.4 miles distance traveled . Towed it home. Can not hear a whirl when turning on ignition at the fuel spout as the manual suggested.
    I bought a new pump/sender assembly.
Question is am I on the right track fixing this? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you burned the pump up when you ran empty. It happens, that's why they say not to do that. I had an Impala with a broken fuel gauge, I ran out so often, in amazed I never did that

I totally agree with this. I do my bestest to attempt 1/4 refills. However I must admit I have crushed it down to that last gallon at least a dozen times this summer. circumstance required that unfortunately.

Ok I feel better attacking the gas can removal. Yuk. Yay me.

I shall report my results accordingly with diligence.

Does anyone have a good link to just lifting the bed for the pump replacement? Or is that just a dumb way to get pump replaced. I am having a hard time getting to that quick connection next to fuel hose clamp. On my 2014 it’s tucked a few inches behind the fuel hose clamp. I just can’t wiggle in there well enough.

On a double cab truck the pump is under the cab so removing the bed won't do much for you.

You should be able to unhook the lines along the frame in front of the tank just note where they go so you don't reverse them when you go back.
