Thanks, I wonder why Mat didn’t delete the older file(s) from the download? Would have gone a lot better for the first ones on 1.7.5 to attempt to flash a stock tune. I don’t plan on going stock anytime soon, just want to know why, all of a sudden, there are bricked ECUs when there should not be.

When you get all your stuff sorted, could you please pull Calibration Verification number from the junk yard ecm? Thanks
Edit: Techstream-use Generic OBD button. Select Powertrain01, then Utility, bottom right select Vehicle Info

This is OG one. Now you need to update to 04b04, using CUW file via techstream.
But get cvn using my steps for both. People will buy you a beer

Oh, right. Yeah, I'll check that this weekend for 04b03. Honestly, I probably wont update to 04b04 until I recover my old one. I don't want to go through the process of having a bricked ECU again...and no method of transportation hah. Even though the odds of anything happening updating to 04b04 are very slim....just a bit weary of doing that right now.

Or why after being told the manufacture couldn't tell if you had a tune we find out that the state can. The gov at a state level. I work there. If they can do it a bunch of baboons on meth could.

That would imply the Tech knows what the CVN should be.

The state(s) know because CARB gathered the information from the Mfg's to implement this new change.

Techstream can actually read the CVN. It's visible in Generic OBDII > Powertrain01 > Utility > Vehicle Info.

As you noted though, I can confirm in my 10+ years as a Toyota tech I never once looked at that value, nor did I have a list to which it could be compared to determine if it had changed.

Yeah, I had to edit. I don't ever use TS for that and forgot that was there.

Well, good news is....I believe I recovered my original ECU that was bricked.

I got the bench harness created and the ECU recovery went through. "ECU Programming Complete".

Woo. I may go swap that one back in to my truck today, so I'm at least running 04B04.

And I used the file @JustDSM linked a few pages back. The files in my vftuner show they are from 2020 lol.

Good work and glad to hear you got the ECU recovered.

The old 2020 04B04 files will have the encryption and thus wont have the OEM CVN. The one I sent you will.

So what exactly caused this? Flashing an old stock file? Someone else was flashing a tune, so that didn’t work, either. Is it the VFTuner software? Will anyone attempting to flash a tune go through this, as well now? Is there a fix?

The 8/27/2023 dated 04B04/04A61 files are "problematic" is about as much as I should say.

Just got it back it the truck, did the immobilization reset thing and she’s running! I’m a happy camper. Sucks I had to spend $175 on an ECU but at least I have a spare one now.

Having a spare isn't a bad thing and you learned a lot about your truck in the process. Still sucks that happened to ya. Glad you got everything figured out and she's back up and running again!
