Toyota announced their TRD engine tune for the Tundra in October. Adds 32hp and max torque (same) comes in 400rpm sooner. Video I saw with the Toyota engineer talking about it said it requires 91 octane but will run on 87. Kit is installed before it gets to dealer for $3,400 MSRP. That includes a cat back exhaust and high flow dual intake. I'm guessing the parts alone are close to $2K and install another $400 and those parts probably contribute ~10hp. So 21hp for a $1,000 factory tune on 91 octane. Figure half that on 87? Seems kinda steep but you do get a special badge on the tail gate. I'm sure there will be a comparable factory TRD tune for the Tacoma soon.

Unless you go off road, like 45% of Tacoma drivers do, in which case a narrow body helps. Cracked flare can be replaced easily. Dented door not so much. When I go wheeling, the Jeeps in the group usually come out with fewer pinstripes, because the cab is narrower:

The article actually said that 45% of Tacoma buyers go off-road. I bet most Tacoma buyers who responded to the survey Toyota is basing this on think driving on a flat dirt road is "off-road" driving. That same survey probably said they like that they can fit the Tacoma in a garage.

    ^Corrected.

There are many 1- or 2-rated forestry roads in my region needed to access lakes and campsites that are easy to drive to, mostly doable in 4x2, but have plenty of tree branches.

Typical local trail at the beginning of season (May). Put on headphones for optimum pinstriping ASMR experience:

At 02:40 you hear me stop to unfold the passenger side mirror after a branch smacked it. My truck was just over a year old at the time with a bit over 10k on the odometer.

You gain 55HP just from premium fuel and a tune? You serious Clark?

The 55% majority would probably prefer the extra interior and bed space than worry about pinstripes from branches.

^False assumption. Extra door clearance is appreciated when mall crawling too. If you want more cabin space get a Ridgeline or a full-size truck :notsure:

Wasn’t calling you out on the 45 - 55% (it’s around 50% is probably about right), but I think they kept it narrow because more people like to garage their Tacoma than take it off road.

Probably good news for 4-Runner fans. The new LC won’t replace the 4R because the LC is wider and that may limit the appeal to some, ie fat soccer mom who wouldn’t be able to get out of an LC parked in her garage.

The lesson learned here is that we need to build bigger garages.

I’m actually pricing out an RV/workshop/home gym garage addition (even though I have a 3-car garage) vs moving to a new home that already has more garage/workshop space.

The silly thing is I bet 55% of Jeep Wrangler drivers never go off-road either. They suffer all the lack of refinement (solid axle ride, wobbly steering, floppy doors with no detents, high road noise) for the ability to take the roof off.

Fitting in the garage is important to a lot of people that live where it gets cold and snows in the winter. It's nice to get into a warm car in the morning and not have to clear snow and scrape ice, especially when you get older.

If only Toyota built a truck larger than the Tacoma that had more interior room, a bigger bed, a larger more powerful engine, and a higher towing capacity. You guys that want a bigger truck should suggest that to Toyota.

They could call it the Curmudgedra.

Absolutely true. I live in an affluent area and there are tons of women driving Rubicons that have never seen dirt. But they also have 10 car garages.
