Knock Knock, it’s cylinder 3

Got a little knock in the ole motor. Time to pull it and rebuild. I’ll document my progress here.

My checks so far. Compression shows cylinder 3 isn’t happy, along with the horrendous noise it makes.

 

I already replaced the head gaskets last year along with resurfacing the heads and a valve job. So hopefully that’s all in good shape still. Pic from August 2022

 

So on order now is a 1500# engine stand, and a load leveling bar to pull the motor. Already have the cherry picker. Plan to disconnect the trans and slide it back a few inches and get everything out the way to pull the motor out. Got some great advice for this from

Following along in your misfortune. How many miles on the resurfaced heads?

 

How many miles does the motor have?

 

You can tell just by listening to the starter turning the over you can hear the engine galloping . This is an indication that a cyl has no compression . The noise you hear is possibly a damaged piston and or rod bearing

 

resurfaced the heads about 240k miles, and motor now has 255k miles on it.

 

that’s what I’m thinking, either wrist pin or journal. You can see in my notes cyl 3 is at 135psi where the rest are closer to 180psi.

Made some progress this weekend prepping to remove the motor. All that’s left is to disconnect the trans from the motor and drop the trans out. Then unplug the rest of the top end wiring and get it out the way. Then unbolt the motor mounts to pull the motor.

 

A start is a start.

 

Was hoping to get more done Saturday, but Christa hurt her knee and couldn’t do yardwork, so I did a little more there than what I thought I would. Then Sunday had a car show/toy drive that was a great success. But yup, it’s a start. It’ll be out and on the stand by this Saturday for sure.

Yup, I’ve hit that cross member too many times for it to come out easily, so didn’t take that out. Figured bolting the mount up and some wood in the frame ought to keep it happy.

Maybe a 4.7, but if the block needs to be machined, I’ll have em do it 50 over. Found a 50 over piston kit.

 

Won't that much require sleeves?
