I have run them for years and only changed this year to try something different and look more aggressive.I have seriously never gotten less than 100k miles out of a set and they are great in all conditions including mild off roading. I maggot them again next time because the up=front cost may be higher, but overall less expensive per mile.

Out of curiosity, why would the pressure be lower than oem being that the oem is smaller, not sure if that has anything to do with it, does it have to do with the load rating?

Load rating and tire size. Every tire can carry X weight at Y pressure, and those numbers are different between all the different sizes and load types of tires. The factory tire is a specific size and the factory chooses what pressure it should be set to to safely maintain the load while also not wearing out prematurely. As long as Toyota does a good job of determining that, then you usually want to maintain close to that capacity and adjust accordingly when changing tire sizes/loads.

P, non-P, and LT tires all have very different load capacities at each pressure. Some start their capacity at 22 PSI, some 26 PSI, some 35. Some max out their carrying capacity in the mid 30’s or early 40’s, while LTs go much higher.

For this specific situation, a 255/75R17 simply happens to carry the same load at 28 psi as a P245/75R16 does at 32 psi. Whereas my LT 255/75R17 needs 37 psi cold to accomplish the same load.

I am on my 4th set of defenders. They have saved me more than once in poor weather. I have ran these tires in all conditions and all weather on street. Not much experience on difficult off road. Defenders do not walk or hydroplane. Came in handy when I came around a curve at 75 and a stream decided to detour over the interstate. They cut right through the overflown stream. Others were already in the median and guardrail. That sold me on the safety on these tires. The extra cost is worth it in my opinion.

I'm a little confused. Using the tire calculator it says that my stock tire size is 245/75 R16, when the door panel says that it is P245/75R16 is there a difference between the two?

There is a difference. P-metric and non-P (euro metric) have different load capacities given a certain tire pressure and they have different minimum and possibly maximum pressures.

How is the calculator telling you what you have? You have to put in the info yourself, from what I’ve seen. Part of that is choosing p-metric or euro metric.

My bad, I was using the tire Pressure Calculator. The pressure calculator is telling me that my stock tire is 245/R16, when the door panel says that it is P245....

If it's missing the P, it's incorrect. What's on the sticker is right.

Thank you, Sir, for your help. Now I have another question. I tow a camper with a tongue weight of approximately 400 lbs. and 300 in the box. Should I boost the pressure a bit to say 35#?

Not a bad idea. I don't know if it will matter, but it won't hurt.

+1 on the Defenders. On my second set now and will buy them again. They last, shed water like crazy, and aired down perform extremely well in sand. Been all over the outer banks in some soupy shit and have never come close to being stuck.

That turned out sharp! I love my Toyos but I have considered going back to Michelins and I might do so in the same size after seeing this. Especially if I could get some MPG and wet performance back.
