4wd not engaging. Green 4wd light was blinking continuously. Replaced front differential actuator today. Now light only blinks when i go to 4 high (4lo light beeps and blinks still when I put in 4low). When I put in 2WD all lights go off. What next?

This is my first Tacoma. It’s an 05 double cab with the 4.0.

So the light continues blinking and never goes solid when you go to 4H?

    You're using it correctly right?

Going between 2hi and 4hi should be done in motion, either forward or reverse. Often doesn't work if you're stopped or transmission in neutral.

Going between 4hi and 4lo needs to be stopped, with the transmission in neutral.

Tried to engage during motion, same result. Began blinking when I went from 2WD to 4H. Will have to get someone to help me with checking the readings you suggested. Will post when I get it done. Thanks

    If it ain’t one thing…..

just took time to do some more work on my Tacoma. Now Got p0420 and p0430 codes coming when I went to pic starter up. Already had purchased a starter to replace the one on it cause it sometimes continues turning after motor is running.

Now it turns over, I smell gas little bit, but it won’t crank! When I crank it last the starter kept turning so I turned the key off and back on to start again to get on home. Turns but not cranking.

jumped time? Fuel issue? EFI fuses good and has gas. New plugs and wires already been professionally put on along with 02 sensor, AC compressor, both drive lines, thermostat, battery, alternator, and other things not engine related. Getting discouraged! Gave 7k for the truck now got close to 15k in it!

Re: Vehicle moving when shifting 2H->4H:

Not necessary/mandatory, but may give you a quicker shift. If you are stopped and the shift doesn't complete successfully, moving slightly forward or back with the transmission in Drive should quickly complete the shift.

I often exercise the system when I'm letting things warm up for a minute with the transmission in Park. Every once in a while it won't complete until I put it in gear and move forward a little.

The P0420/430 codes are catalyst efficiency codes and almost certainly unrelated to the no start.

Have you checked if you have spark?

Had fire but no gas. Guage was on 1/4 tank gas. Added 5 gallon and it started up just fine. So my gauge isn’t correct. At least got that accomplished this weekend.

    thanks for help

Not uncommon for the fuel gauge to not be correct on that age of truck.

My 2014 will engage in 4 hi in neutral and stopped as well as when moving. Only warning is not to engage at speeds higher than 15mph or so.

I believe shifts from H2 to H4 are permissible while underway any time at speeds of less than 62 mph.

I do it on a regular basis on rainy or snowy road surfaces to exercise the system, but I keep the speed below 40 mph when shifting into 4H.

Rules on shifting into 4L are clear and unambiguous: Stop, Transmission in Neutral, foot on brake: turn the dial to 4L..

Note: The above applies to an automatic. Dunno about a shift to 4L with a manual at speed, except to say that I prob would never do it.
