Should I buy 2017 Taco with 250K miles?

I'm curious how much time factors into that 200-300K average lifespan too, if at all. Highway miles versus city driving? I'm definitely not a mechanic and rather ignorant with cars/trucks, tbh. I am going to have another mechanic buddy of mine check it out tomorrow but I'm leaning towards the purchase at this point. It's clean cosmetically and I can handle all of the little mechanical issues that may come up, just not sure if I could afford a new engine if that were needed. I probably will only put 5K-10K miles on it a year going forward to make up for the 40k it's gotten each year so far. Not sure if that balances out or not, lol. The advice I have gotten here is balanced/fair and about what I expected. It's a tuff call but I certainly can't afford much more than this, i.e. a lower mileage 2017 for $25k so may just have to suffice for my budget, or just no truck for me at this time.

 

Check for the timing cover leak, coolant crossover pipe leak, and ideally test drive it as long as you can in case it has the P11XX valve issue (chance for code to pop up).

Company vehicle and well taken care of are two things that I have never seen together. I don't have to see it - that vehicle has been given as much care as Rick James with a sofa... plus it's high milage.

Tell your company to send it straight to auction - that horse is dog food.

If you bought a $12k vehicle from the person that employs you, and it shits the bed faster than you think it should (and it probably will), what is that going to cost you, aside from $12k? There's plenty of better vehicles out there for $12k. Offer them $2k and see what happens.

 

Everybody’s wants, needs and financial situation is different. My philosophy is I trade in when I want something new or my Toyota approaches 200,000 miles.

 

Buy it, drive it, and keep us updated. Everything is speculation in this thread. It could last 400k and would be a steal at that point. Used 3rd gen TRD 4x4's with any mileage are fetching crazy prices still in my region. Lot's of wrecked ones to pull motors out of if it craps the bed on you. Roll the dice!

$25k budget allows for many vehicles better than turd gens which are turds regardless of miles.

I bought my 2nd gen with high miles. It worked. It has more miles now. It still works.
Odds are it will get more miles and then still work.

1980-2000s yotas are still on the road. They were designed better.

cheaper price means more money for replacing and upgrading parts that usually in stock form suck from day one.

any premium price isn’t because the truck is fundamentally that. It’s just what the market says for reasons.

 

I can’t stress how important this is.

One of my sister’s employees drove a truck from Denver to Colorado Springs with multiple engine and transmission warning lights on the dashboard because he wanted to get back home on time and not wait around for a tow truck.

Totally destroyed the transmission.

 

I'm going to have my mechanic test drive it with me tomorrow. I'm also going to point out the things the others suggested I check out here (or have him do that rather). I respect the opinions to 'pass' on it but am just not sure. I do think there is a difference between 'well taken care of' and 'well maintained.' I agree that most of our drivers don't really care about the vehicles (not well taken care of), but, we deliver cannabis throughout the state so I don't think there's been extreme excessive driving on the vehicle, although there's obviously been a lot of it. I think most of the scheduled maintenance has been done by our security guards, at night, who were also our drivers during the day, but, hard to say what care they took in this effort. There was at least some attention to it and a desire to keep up with it. If that rose to the level of taken care of, I am not sure.

They will not go lower than $11k, btw.

 

I’d check the frame since it likely saw it’s share of salty roads. Leaky transfer case might be just a new cover and gasket, how much is a replacement transfer case? I would plan on $1200 for a replacement, new windshield runs $700-$1000 since not covered by insurance. So, if the frame is good $10k max.

 

They fall apart with 100k, sounds like it’s one of the few that have been built to last

 

I would say that there are far better and more reliable vehicles out there for 12 grand than that one, even if we did take the weird Toyota cult of invincibility as true.

But since you're undeterred despite being told that the stove is hot, best of luck to you, I hope you get your money's worth.

I'm not really undeterred, I guess I'm just a victim of that cult at the moment and taking what I hear here with some grains of salt. I am listening. I guess in the back of my mind I was thinking at the very least I could flip it and not be out much. Maybe that is bad thinking.

 

A new engine for this truck is 25k... just so you're aware.
