The "Baker death trap," others have deemed it the "suicide stand." One of the louder, yet most widely recognized stands, the Baker had a bad reputation.

How we didnt die back in the day blows my mind. we made homemade stands with wood platform. electrical conduit for support with a piece of flat stock to stick in tree. and a chain n turnbuckle to wrap around the tree.squirrels would eat the stand if you used pressure treated lumber. I fell one time 15ft putting one up. thank goodness i landed on my buddy there with me. he wasnt impressed. LOL

My favorite climber died an ignominious death last year. Was a Loggy with the “whale tail” base. Loved that stand. Weighed 14lbs, folded to about 5” flat, and when the over center buckle was latched, rock solid. Had it locked to a tree at the beginning of the season. Went to use it the end of October and this is what I found.

Work has finally slowed down and I was able to get this coming Friday off. I was looking forward to a nice three day hunt at my camp. Then my cameras started going off.

They started logging my lease again with a month and a half left of season. Ugh, oh well, I’ll give it hell trying.

No, no heads up or anything. The owner couldn’t care less about hunting. There’s not going to be many trees on the property to cut soon. They logged it last year as well. I’ll adjust and hunt it as best as I can.

Sometimes deer will browse a freshly logged area for of the good eating that used to be out of reach, but is now laying on the ground. :fingerscrossed:

Had to deal with loggers the last 2 seasons in GA. Pine beetle issues. Moved stands to different areas to compensate for movement. Sucks seeing a few of your favorite stand trees gone!! :(

Many years ago we were hunting on a few thousand acres a land company owned. Good hunting, usually had no problem seeing deer, then they came in and logged it. Clear cut it with almost be a better way to describe it. Not sure what their criteria was, in some places they left some mature trees, but in most they took it down to anything that would make pulp. Anyway, it took about 2 years for the undergrowth to make hunting all but impossible in some areas. The bright side was the deer population exploded. Went from maybe getting skunked, but most likely seeing a handful of deer, to like herds of them. Great hunting for about 10 years or so, until they came in and strip mined it.

The first tree stand I ever used was an old Baker type that I found in the woods with the platform rotted away. Put a platform on it, would climb a tree with a strap, strap myself in, and stand there. I'm not sure that lasted one season. Next stand was a homemade Baker type with a seat on it. Loved that stand and hunted many years out of it. Thinking back on it I'm not sure what happened to it, stolen probably. The next one was a band type stand that came as a kit. They sold you the hardware, you cut out the platform and put it together. Liked that stand, but it got stolen. Next was the Summit. Hunted out of that stand for one year and sold it. Then came the Loggy. Still hunt out of it to this day.
