I invest in an oil evacuator?

You got a crawl under the truck to do the filter anyway, draining the oil is even easier than changing the filter.

Please help me understand the need for the oil evacuator.

He uses the same filter for 2 oil changes. Some people do it. IIRC Honda used to recommend a filter change at every other oil change.

Toyota OEM filters are $3.50, if you buy a case. I see no reason to run them for 2 oil change intervals.
Both of my Yotas use the same filter, I buy them a case at a time and change oil/filter once a year/5K-6K miles.

I was at dealer yesterday. I asked service about oil changes. The guy recommends every 5k but toyotacare will only do 10k & 20k. You pay for the ones in-between. As for the 1 yr or 10k, he said that wrong too. 10k. I won't be anywhere near 20k at the end of toyotacare & based on my current miles at 6 months, I might hit 5k at 12 months. He said if I had less than 10k at end of 2 yrs, I wouldn't get any free oil changes. I'm not saying he's right or wrong but they have told me this twice now.

oh hell no……….I MIGHT consider changing the filter and not the oil. Would not consider changing oil and leaving a dirty filter in play

I did my first ToyotaCare oil change at 13 months, and I was at 4863 miles, 2nd was last week, at 8,505 miles, almost at 2 year mark. 2 different dealers, no problems.

yep. everyone forgets that every oil filter has a bypass valve in it. capability to run old oil doesn't mean the filter can still 'filter'...

When I bought then truck, the sales guy told me I get 2 oil changes within 2 yrs or 25k miles. I asked if I could bring it in early & get a 2500 & 5k change, he said yes. It's 2 changes & didn't matter what mileage yo took them to. When I took it in the 1st time, service manager said no. Every 10k miles, 2 yr or 25k miles. I might contact a different dealer.

Whatever 0w-20 or 5w-20 sythetic is on sale. Every one of the oils below works well.

ToyotaCare is based on time and mileage. If you have under 10,000 miles at one year they should give you an oil change. There are only 2 oil changes included in the plan included with every Tacoma. The other ones are mostly just a quick maintenance check and a tire rotation. I only got to 18,000 miles near the end of my 2 years and I took it in and they did the 20k oil change. I never got the 25,000 mile service. It all goes away at 2 years. If you drive low milage they should do an oil change for you at year one and before the 2nd year.

You are missing the point. It’s the oil that is metal saturated and changing the filter does nothing to correct this. Filters can easily filter the oil for 10k miles at their specified micron & efficiency rating. They don’t become clogged or dirty unless an engine is truly full of sludge. It’s also not a cost issue, I just find it pointless. Especially in the first 1k miles. If you want to do the filter it does not hurt anything but in my opinion you are not gaining anything.

Again, the whole point of changing the oil early is to remove the metal saturated oil the filter cannot remove. Changing the filter but not the oil does nothing to correct this, not to mention the bypass. Not sure why this is a difficult concept for people to understand.

Any metal particle small enough to get through the filter media is too small to cause harm.

Not sure why this is such a difficult concept for people to understand.

Absolutely incorrect, and anyone who builds engines clearly knows this. But don’t take my word for it, ask them yourself. It’s called microscopic scoring and you would be surprised how much gets through.

I really guess this depends on what your definition of “harm” is.

Really any type of scoring is not good for the internals. This procedure is standard for engineers and builders. Even the car care nut guy did the same exact thing when replacing the short block on the OCI video. It’s so cheap to do. Unfortunately, marketing and maintenance cost trumps the engineers. I learned this because I worked in a performance engine shop for a bit when I was young and rebuilt / balanced a few motors. Fantastic experience. Especially balancing a motor and making sure many of the internals weigh the same. Talking about a smooth running engine when you do this.

well I can tell you this. Engineers designed the oil filters to filter at a determined micron rate for a reason. They also set the bypass spring rate for a reason. They have determined that a particular size of matter is acceptable for engine operation. Also, in regards to the bypass, dirty oil is better than the oil.

So yes, these microscopic particles that get through the oil filter due indeed affect the engine components. Engineers determined and acceptable amount and size of material.

so you are partially right, partially wrong.
