Having worked in IT for big companies with critical systems (critical = if the developer fucks up enough people die) Rivian needs to hire a Quality Assurance team. At one gig any change to a critical system required a senior engineer tp make the changes in a sandboxed system, documenting each and every step, button click, entry, and expected result. When that was done the QA team would evaluate the changes, confirming them and making sure no other functionality was impacted. After all of that, which could take weeks, two techs would apply the change to production. The first tech was called "Done By" and they were at the computer making the entries, clicking the mouse, etc. The second tech was called "Checked By" and their job was to confirm each step was done and no typos, missed mouse clicks, etc happened. They would initial each step in the procedure created by the senior engineer. Then the QA team would check that the production system is correct before releasing it to the users. (If you wonder why your prescription drugs cost so much, that's a tiny part of the reason. I wouldn't have it any other way.)

Speaking of OTA's, I had an interesting experience this week. My Model Y had to go to the service center because the passenger seat belt sensor was being flakey, and they gave me a Model X loaner. There's a lot to say about that, but the thing that is pertinent here is the software version on the Model X was the same as what came on my Model Y 2 years ago. I don't know why Tesla hadn't kept it up to date. It's funny how reliant I've become to new features that have come OTA after I bought the car. The first thing I noticed was the turn signals didn't auto cancel. I was driving down the freeway like an old man with my turn signal just flashing away. Can you imagine having to cancel the turn signal like some sort of caveman? The difference between the old and new autopilots was huge. Rivian fucked up for sure, the real question is will they learn from this mistake?

That whole video was a bit of a cringe fest. The hosts getting all "wE FoUNd PoOr bUiLd QuAliTy" on a prototype. Give me a break. Then when the company got pissy with them I was done. What I'm reminded of is this company

Here come the Cyber truck reviews -

I've paid zero attention to the Cyber truck, so this is my first review video. I don't know, would I buy one? Maybe. I could sell my Tacoma and Model Y. Having owned the Model Y for 2 years has proven that I don't really need a truck all that often. I'm not a fan of the styling, but it does piss off a certain demographic that spends their life pissed off at things that are none of their business. I guess it remains to be seen how hard it will be to acquire one.

My nephew (who already has a Tesla sedan, I forget the model..S?) put a deposit on the truck a couple of years ago. Figures if he doesn't want it he can sell his spot or something

    https://interestingengineering.com/science/a-hidden-deposit-of-lithium-in-a-us-lake-could-power-375-million-evs

A deposit of lithium in a US lake could power 375 million EVs

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently revealed the results of an extensive analysis conducted by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, unearthing an immense store of lithium beneath California's Salton Sea.

Termed the "Saudi Arabia of lithium" by Governor Gavin Newsom, the region's underground reservoir of scorching hot brine is now estimated to contain enough lithium to produce a staggering 375 million electric vehicle batteries.

This discovery positions the Salton Sea as one of the largest lithium brine deposits globally, promising a seismic shift in America's approach to lithium production.

"Lithium is vital to decarbonizing the economy and meeting President Biden’s goals of 50% electric vehicle adoption by 2030," said Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, in a statement.

Considering the dust from the area is already an issue I suppose it trades one problem for another but at least doesn’t turn a pristine landscape into a hot mess.
