Toyota used to be that company but now they are more expensive than all of their competition for a product that isn't any better.

They literally are pricing themselves out of the market for the younger population.

I remember the $14,995 1st gen Tacoma 5lug poverty package. My neighbor still has a purple one.

Even with all of the potential concerns, I’d still trust Toyota with a turbo 4 and 8spd truck over GM with the same

If you bought that package in Jan 1998, you paid the equivalent of $28,549 today. The 2024 SR starts at just a few k more, but is a vastly more capable, comfortable, and safe truck. Seems like not so bad

So everyone says the 4th gen is better than the 3rd. But based on the article posted by OP....is it 20k better??? That is now the question.

I have the 4x4 access cab for less than 29k. That was the point. There is no cheap truck anymore.

Sure there is. The value of a dollar isn’t what it once was. A sub-35k 4x4 truck is pretty cheap, and that’s still available

Markups aside, the article has an $8500 Premium Package listed - leather, sunroof, heated seats and a JBL stereo for $8500!!!!!!

    Shouldn't that package cost $2-$3k?

And I’m saying Toyota needs to focus on that part of the market instead of saying they’ll be a shitty Maverick/Stout for the cheap truck crowd.

    Expensive trucks will die out.

This is only a thing in the US market.

Maybe they “should” focus on it, but the fact that most buyers do not seek low-trim trucks here means they probably wouldn’t sell as many trucks and make as much money if they did.

how many non-fleet drivers are out there buying new Colorado WTs or SR access cabs? The production numbers generally follow demand, and we can see that things like the Lariat, z71/trail boss, and TRD off road in double cab size are what people want to buy when they actually put the money on the table

if the demand landscape changes, I bet you’ll see more small and cheaper vehicles. But trying to lead the market demand like that is a recipe for disaster

The retail on that Truck is about 43k. 41k is a deal, but I would say it isn't a fair comparison since the updated 24 Colorado's are coming within the next few months.

Every 24 trim except the LB TRD's and Limited are priced at or below that Colorado. The first batch is being loaded with add on garbage because dealers know they can get away with it. If you can wait for a Tacoma without the dealer fluff the prices don't seem that bad in todays world.

Dealers probably only allocated low numbers initially, so markup helps keep the new model on the lot unless somebody really wants it.

2023 Colorado base price is $30,695 including delivery. 2024 is $300 more? Yeah, the Taco SR has extra features, but Toyota are the more expensive work truck by thousands. Plus, you can custom order and get a Colorado without packages you don't want and the 2023 are found well under MSRP. When you get to the loaded vanity trucks that drive around with empty beds and stay in the garage when it rains, not so sure competitive pricing is so important. Emotions are powerful. But there is still the overall problem of price inflation outstripping wage increases (unless you are in a politically connected big bully union) and high interest rates making all these less affordable. Plus, full size trucks are well under MSRP if you shop around, and not too hard to find, even Tundra. The age old problem - more luxurious 'cheaper, smaller ' truck or get more truck for the same or less cost.

I bought a new Tacoma 4x2 access cab SR5 in 2006 for $19,000. Adjusting for inflation, that's equivalent to $29,000 in 2023 dollars. When I spec out a similar 2024 truck on the configurator it's $35,000, 20% more. The trucks are not that different.

    You don’t think there’s much difference between a 2024 and a 2006?

There are some differences. I'd lose the two access doors so it will be harder to get stuff in/out from behind the seats. I also won't be able to seat anyone back there - didn't use that much but it came in handy a couple times. Looks like I might lose the sliding rear window. And everything I shovel into the bed will have to be lifted 5-8" higher. The tradeoff is I get more horsepower and slightly worse gas mileage, which I didn't need.

This thing was on the lot for over a year now. Somehow I am confident I can knock him into the sub $45k range before this is all over.

11/22 build date and a manual.....with a $66.5k MSRP. People keep saying Toyota is out of touch but Jeep with the first one to really jack up the midsize price.
