Rear brake drag issue 1st Gen Tacoma

Last year I installed BAMF LSPV relocation bracket hoping to help my braking a bit. It did, but it had the unintended consequence of creating a new problem. Now, every time I go down a decent hill and really step on the brakes, the drums seem to stay engaged for a while after and I'll get this horrible vibration at any speed over 40, I can tell it's coming from the rear, and my brake pedal is super high/stiff when I go to slow down while the vibration is occurring. Eventually, the vibration goes away and pedal feel goes back to normal, but it's a pain in my a**. Took the LSPV bracket out to see what would happen (I have a 3" block in rr) and the problem is a little better but it still happens a bit (and now I have no rr braking ofc). I've talked to some folks who think maybe it's a bad MC, and some other ideas point to the return line from the LSPV being bad/clogged.. I'm thinking to delete the LSPV and slap in a Wilwood valve but the bolts/fittings on my LSPV look like they went through WWII from salty roads. Thoughts? Anyone experience the same thing? Any help appreciated

 

Have you inspected the drums and shoes for any oddness?

My other thought would be that it just has too much rear bias unloaded but just thinking out loud.

 

I meant to add that--I did take the drums off and inspected the shoes, everything looks good and the shoes have barely been touched since I replaced drums/shoes. I had a shop double-check that the shoes were adjusted right, and the wheel cylinders don't leak and are in good shape. I'd think that it wouldn't have enough rear bias unloaded because the valve senses less load due to the axle already being further from the frame because of my lift

 

After you create the symptoms, jump out and touch the rear rims with your fingers. If they (or just one) are too hot to touch, I would back off the adjustment of that brake shoe. Your symptoms happened to me a couple years ago after I installed aftermarket brake shoes. Never again!

 

May have shoes adjusted too tight. Like they said, check drums.

 

did you just back off the shoe and have it resolve your issue or did you get some OEM shoes? I did notice my shoes sort of bind with the dust shield/back part of the assembly that they pivot on

 

Did you use the brake lube where the shoes contact and slide against the dust shield?

 

I adjusted the brakes off so will not quite spin all the way around with no wheel on axle. Have you cleaned the old parts or replaced the old parts?

 

I backed off the adjustment a couple of times over a few hundred miles. Had to do it twice on both drums.

Then I bought a set of Toyota shoes, but never got around to installing them because my adjustments finally began to work.

 

Parking parking brake cable hanging up. Jack it up apply the parking brake then release see if it's hanging up.

 

The only time I had noticeable brake drag from a rear drum it turned out to be from a lever that connects to the bell crank. I don't know what it's actually called but the end of it can be seen in the photo. The part of it that can't be seen is on a pivot and was seized on mine causing brake drag.

 

Do you mean that the part would move but would not return when you released the e-brake handle?

 

Yes, if I remember correctly that is what was happening. Not sure how much if any movement it actually had. It took quite a bit of effort to get it freed up and off to clean it up.

I think mine is starting to get rusty again after a couple of years. or my cable needs replaced
