Dog Bite

So sat. my wife and i spent a couple hours in the E.R. w my 3 year old. no one saw it happen and dont really know what happened. my guess would be he was jumping or leaning on her to where she didnt like it. he probably had it comming. but my 7 year old golden retreiver (misty) bit my son in the face. he's fine but needed 2 stiches inside and 5 outside of his upper lip. we have had her since she was a puppy, she IS NOT the type to bite and NEVER has. she is a VERY good dog actually. i dont think she will do it again (but i thought that before too) what should i do? Give her another chance? thank you guys.

as sad as it is, dogs that bite once will bite again. my guess is the older she gets the worse it will be and the less tolerant she will be.

anytime a dog draws blood on anyone in your family it is grounds for dismissal IMHO


thats how i feel having survived a near death dog bite from a "friendly" family dog(sisters dog). Dog bit me once, sister dismissed the severity, next time i was bit dog tore out my neck and almost killed me. I was 5yrs old

 

I've never given a dog a second chance...You say she's not the type-but she did. That is enuf for me.

They are both family- but kids are blood....Dogs aren't. I'll "get rid" of a dog that threatens or hurts my kid in a hot second.

 

bro I feel your pain. I love my dog to death but your kids are more important. Once a pup shows the tendency for agression, which she did, its time to get rid of the dog. There are orginzations that will put the dog in a good home with no kids around if you cannot bring yourself to euthanize the dog. Either way the dog and kid cant be in the same house

 

I disagree with some of the previous statements, I had a dog that was around children all the time and then one day when my cousins were over teasing the dog with food out of sight of the parents, the dog snipped and my cousin had to get stitches in her lip also. Dog never bit anyone ever again.

 

thank you everyone! i PERSONALLY agree stongly with my kids are blood and the dog is not. my wife and i need to talk about this and "soul search". i aprreciate everyones comments and again thanks!

 

why take the chance in hoping the dog doesnt bite again. If it does it could potentially kill your child. a dog is still an animal with way more power then we give them credit for

 

I vote give the dog another chance. It is only one time. It sucks that no one was there to see it so you could have the story. But kids are rough on animals the pull hair, scratch, and rough house. The dog probably got scared or hurt and reacted by bitting.

 

I understand where everyone is coming from, but like you said your son could have put weight on her where it didn't belong. I'm not violent but if someone puts a knee in my nutsack I'm going to give a push to let them know get off. Plus to me it sounds like it was a warning bite. If she wanted to hurt him she could have done a lot worse than that.

 

ive known plenty of dogs that would take the pain rather than hurt anyone

 

just like you said a dog is an animal, your taking chance by having a dog in the first place. Just like our human nature is to fight back when provoked, its the same as a dogs. Give the dog a chance if it's been a good dog besides this.

awwww. A Golden biting??? I couldn't imagine my Golden biting anyone. . . I love dogs, and I love Goldens, but I would have to try and find someone to take the dog. The baby is now in danger.

 

i agree. its a sign she is becoming less tolerant and can potentially be worse...

your conscience not mine when the dog bites again and its your fault by not removing it from the equation... i hope it never happens but it can...

yeah i was going to say this also. You should be able to keep your dog away from your child, and if they are ever together keep a close eye.

 

I know that your kids are more important, but the fact that you didn't see what happened could be a big factor. I have a 12 year old Aussie and I trust him totally. With that said he did bite me one night. It was minor, but the point of this is that he didn't mean to! He has a tendancy to bring items in from outside that he shouldn't have. Like acorns, rocks and whatever. He likes to do this to get attention. When I try to get them from him he will run and it's a game to him. Being impatient one night and ready for bed and didn't want him eating and making a mess on the carpet with a nut he had brought in, I reached to take it from him and he bit at it (his way of playing) and got my fingers. I know he didn't mean to. So all I'm saying is you have to use your own judgement. Nobody on here knows better than you. You know how your dog does arround your kid.

Another thought, me and my wife watch animal cops and shows like this and they always show how they test strays on food aggression and such. Maybe you can find someone at like the ASPCA or such to have him checked out professionally? Just a thought.

 

From what I understand even the pound gives dogs two strikes. After that they're done. If it were me, knowing the dog hasn't done anything in SEVEN years, I wouldn't put her down. I would find her a home somewhere without children. Maybe a brother or sister? Or put an ad in the paper. But seven years of loyalty shouldn't go to waste over something that was probably an accident. But I don't think I could keep her in the house.

 

Maybe this for a while, but don't let your son become afraid of dogs. If you hide him from dogs he will know something is wrong and always be afraid. I would use this a teaching moment about animals and how they work, and how to treat them.
