New guy here. Second Tacoma, both 1st Gen models. Latest is a '02. Nothing special, std cab, base model, 4x4 - 5 speed, mystic gold, 98k miles and rust free. Takes forever to get to "normal" temp just like my first unit and it seems to run fantastic, but loud. Wish I had a tach. Just reinstalled the fender extensions.......

Nice truck! I would check the actual coolant temp in real-time with a OBDII reader to see if the buffered temp gauge is reporting correctly. My 2000 gets up to 186F pretty quick and stays there.

Oh wow. Now that is a fine suggestion. Yesterday it took only a few miles of running up and down the Asheville hills for the needle to reach "normal" position (right at the top wave of the temp icon. I did change out the thermo/coolant and the little temp sender (easy one). No change to the visual indication time period. I'm probably just being anal. All my vehicle temp gauges have always shown a faster response to the temp/time curve.

Ha ha well I found a 2005 with 85k miles for 12,300 which seems like a fair price. So less than that! But I really don’t need 2 Tacomas, I just want 2 Tacomas.

I suspect it has to do with a slightly different calibration on the temp gauge compared to my early 2000. My gauge is pretty quick but it certainly is not 'real time'. It is delayed a bit but not far off. I know that car companies prefer the 'buffered' coolant temp gauge since people freak out when it swings from the middle. BMW is a good example. Old BMWs (think mid 80's and earlier) mostly had a 'real time' coolant temp gauge but they found that it was too much information to provide to most drivers that dont understand engines. So they went to a buffered temp gauge. I can see their point but the problem happens when a car runs too hot. Suddenly it goes from "in the middle and perfect" to totally boned from massive overheating.

On our 2000 Taco I run a Scangauge II and it shows the actual coolant temp I find that info valuable. The stock gauge is just not responsive enough to matter.
