Black Lab or Chocolate Lab?

I've posted a thread a month or so back already kind of on this but I thought I'd start a new one because my question is a little different this time.

Im wanting to get a lab for duck hunting/camping/riding in the truck etc. and I've been hearing that the mentality between yellow/chocolate/black labs are different. I keep hearing that black labs are very hyper and energentic. I'm preferring a chocolate but can't find one yet. I've found someone who has a few black lab pups and was thinking about maybe getting one of the females.

Do you lab or dog owners have a chocolate or a black lab? Is there really even a mentality difference?

We have a black lab mixed with pit. He's a big strong energetic crazy sumbitch.....a lil over a year old. As long as they still have pup in them....they're gonna be on the go a lot. The while lab we had for 16 years.......he was actually calm....a lot more so as he got older. Chocolate lab my dad had...same way.

 

I have had 2 chocolate labs and they have both been amazing! Its all in how you raise and train the dog in the first 6 months but the consistency you have in maintaining the discipline. My current pup is 6 and I hace worked with my guy everyday for the first 6 months and haven't given him an inch since. He is on verbal and hand commands and has never been on a leash or worn a collar. He is fantastic. Very mellow tempered but has great energy when needed, great with kids, other dogs, and have not had any issues with him. On a side note, I custom made a blanket/pad for the back seats to keep it all clean in the back but also more comfortable for him to lay on. Can post pics if interested.

 

black. I have a chocolate lab and shes dumber than a box of rocks. plus she feels the need to lick everything and everyone... maybe I have a dud...

 

Been around labs all my life, I'd say that the personalities really are not reflected in the coat color, but an unscientific observation is that the chocolates tend to get overweight easier than the black or yellow.

Pick any of them, but be careful with the food.

And yes, they are a real handful until about age 4, when they become your best friend.

are labs are the same. both labs and goldens are a pain is the ass till 3 or 4 years of age but they are amazing smart and loyal. You just have to work with them. Use commerical breaks. When they are 4 months you can start training but for only 15 mins at a time or they will tire of it. I taught mine every time a commercial came on and it worked great. Labs and goldens are what dogs are supposed to be like

ive got a 10 year old black lab.shes cool shit and well behaved. i got her when she was a 8 months old in hopes of her being a good birddog but she cant swim worth a damn lol, not like my dog before her anyway. she was a golden lab who went apeshit when she seen ya gettin out the guns lol she couldnt wait to head out on the water.

 

I have a black lab and my grandad has a black lab, mines crazy and never stops running, not necesarily hyper but energetic he jst turned four and is stdarting to mellow out a bit. His has been laid back for his whole life but will get a mean streak every now and then not towards people but other dogs while mine never gets mad. Oh and they have the same parents too.

 

damn... glad im not the only one with a lab that hates water. both my yellow and chocolate are afraid of water. they are like cats when you get them near a pond or creek... or even a little play pool.

 

My lab and boxer both love water........more so the lab. I have a kiddie pool for them...and when we leash walk them....if there is a mud puddle......they are romping around in it. Lol

 

we just bought a chocolate lab pup in Auburn last weekend, we also have a black lab.. she's old so she just lays around all day and sits in the duck blind...not to retrieve birds..but just to hang out with the guys.

Nice. did you get from a breeder or a shelter or something? I couldn't find a chocolate lab pup around here at all.

 

I wouldnt call the person a "breeder" but yeah..they thought it would be fun to breed chocolate labs..they only had one litter before they realized it wasn't their thing. They had like 3 males and 1 female. I think they had one male left when we got ours.

 

Go black. Brown labs always seem to be out of it.

 

If I can't find a chocolate around me in the next few days I will be getting a black pup.
