I used to run regularly. I had a reason. I was an avid "western" bowhunter. elk, deer, etc. hiking and carrying a heavy load is always expected so thru the year, I ran the roads, and I ran the trails. I needed to stay in shape to carry my weight.

well, something clicked in my brain, I decided to stop hunting for the most part. maybe I have had enough. dunno, never unpacked the decision to think about it.

the downside? I got kinda lazy. I took up bass fishing from a kayak and that took up my attention. I accepted a promotion which required a lengthy commute. that is a good excuse. well, it all sucked.

I have been waking up at 4:00 am, leashing up my dog HANK, and we are on a program. I am taking it easier than the past. working slowly so I don't discourage myself. I pulled off 6 days a week. one day I went fishing hahah. I feel oddly better. more awake thru the day. ironically, less tired.

    starting over blows.

Good on you for getting active again. Base fitness is one of the pillars of good health, like what you stated, that will improve other things like your brain.

Congratulations. Good on you for getting back into it.

Since you were already a jogger before, you probably have a solid plan. But if I tried to go 6 days a week, I'd get burned out pretty quick.

I've ran and placed well in probably 25-30 half marathons running 3-4 times a week, so I know if you are mainly after conditioning, you'd be okay skipping some days when you feel like a break.

I hear you on the hunting. I used to hunt religiously from 18 until about 45 years old, then I just quit. It just got to be feeling like a chore rather than a sport. Kind of like yet another thing to try to find the time to be good at.

    Great + good job!!

I started running last January about 4x a week - got the dog as support and encouragement too; can't tell the dog no.
It definitely makes me feel better and have more energy.
    I also lift 3-4 days a week.

    Keep up the good work.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Couches kill! Get out and get moving! Starting back slowly is the way, and you will sleep better and have more energy as your described.

It’s easy to fall off the wagon, but being aware and acting on it IS the hardest part. You already overcome that hurdle, so just keep that body moving.

Like your last hobby, get into something new will help you big time, and making a point to take that dog out is probably the best thing to do. The pup wants it, and creating that bond/routine is rewarding for sure.

Good on you! Take it easy initially and take a day or two off if something is bugging you. If something keeps bugging you, find a good physio. (Dm me if you’re near MV.) If medical establishment types tell you to stop running, take that with a grain of salt. I’ve had two orthopedists tell me not to be a distance runner, and I just finished a 100 miler recently without pain.

Everybody’s different - ymmv big time - but when I’m actually training to a set schedule, I have that on the fridge so I don’t have to think about what I’m doing that day.

Oh man does it!!! Former fitness instructor/supervisor here. I have worked out since 16. At my peak, I ran 7 miles 6 days a week, lifted weights, and ride my bike 20 miles. (I was off work at the time and filled my day with working out) I also always had a very physical job until about 3. 5 years ago and needed to keep my strength and endurance up for the long hours. I had a life changing event a year and 4 months ago and have struggled getting back into it although I know I need to as it will be good for me. I’ve worked out a day here or there but nothing consistent. My son came over this morning and lifted with me:) gonna try to keep it up and let it be my lifestyle again. Took it easy today cuz I’d like to walk tomorrow

As far as running again….. come spring. Fair weather runner here :hattip: In the past I’d jump on my treadmill, but life changing event is the reason I can’t do that this winter.

No greater feeling than when you start working out again!!! Good for you!!!

I got up to 7.5km in 30-40 mins this summer, then sustained 2 lower back injuries separately in the fall, I'm finally at the point where I can walk 5-10k again but now its icy and cant really run outside of going to a gym.

I finally had decent cardio health but my core strength failed me.

Going out today to do a fast walk, but I really miss the progress I had.

Thats great man, our husky mix passed last year and she loved jogging with me. It's that sled dog mentality, running with the pack, etc..

Last few years I've gotten into ski touring (but with a splitboard). Hiking up 2-3,000 vertical feet with heavy skis on my feet and a 30lb pack whips your ass real good

Yea it's a five month old thread but since there's already a jogging thread...

Good for you OP. I took way too much time off after a back injury (2 years but can't change that now, moving on), but started back up small this morning, and I'll keep it low distance for a bit to keep my motivation up. It felt great though. I love early AM runs where there are no cars, no people, no noises...

Nice to see all the encouragement in this thread too

Hey man, you'll be surprised how short the recovery period will be. After some heart issues, I've been back on the street for about a month after 8 months off. I was really surprised at my pace, even though I need to stop for 15-20" breathers fairly frequently.

I've always been exactly the opposite. My energy levels peak around 4pm each day. I love the 4-6pm time slot.

BTW, running gets discussed in "The Official Gym and Fitness Thread" because @PackCon loves to taunt the muscle builders there. He knows they're triggered by it. :)

Used to love to taunt them.

I've been on a running hiatus for about a year now due to health issues. I have neuropathy in my feet and have broken both feet 3 months apart. They are trying to figure out what is going on. But both fractures have healed now and gabapentin helps with the pain. I am in a place where I think I'm safe to get back to it so this week will be come 400m jogs repeats and we will see how it goes.
