5 tire rotation with only 4 tpms

I just purchase 5 new tires and a 5th oem rim to match. I only have 4 tpms. When I do the rotation in my next oil change the spare with no tpms will mounted. Does anyone know if this will have any effect on the dash lights(tpms)? Thanks

 

just pop out the tpms and put in spare

 

It’s not going to work. Whoever sold you all this stuff should have told you that. Buy a sensor and do it right, just my 2c.
Edit: If you’re broke these work perfectly, I’ve had a set in my truck for two years no issues.

Can you tell me why it wouldn't work? I believe you I just want to know why. The guy at the tire shop did tell me it would shoot a code. I should have had it done there. live and learn.

 

I haven’t done it in a few years but, I was only able to program 4 sensors with Techstream back in the day on the earlier Tacoma’s. It might have changed with the newer generations.

 

Yeah that's a good point, it may not read 5 tpms. The tire guys seems to think it will. Interesting

 

Reading a few posts from other owners it seems that the third gen only reads 4 at a time. The tires don't have to be rotating for the tpms to be picked up. So when I rotate 5 one of the tires will be under the bed. Only issue would be that if the spare location tire loses air over time the spare would have to be dropped to top off so the dash light would go off. I will find out soon enough. I think for me the rotating 5 tires is worth the risk of dash light to keep my tires longer. I'll just have to mark the wheel without the sensor.

 

5 sensors (spare) stopped during 2009 production year.

It 'might' pick it up in the spare position, report back and let us know.

Having the 5th sensor would require a programming change at every rotation. So unless you have your own tool to do that.......

I've not done a 5 tire rotation on anything since I started using radial tires.

 

For sure, I will report back after I've put some miles on it.

 

I do a 5 tire rotation. My spare has a TPMS. I took it to Discount tire so they could reprogram the truck when I started but stopped after a couple of times as it was a pain and time consuming. I honestly couldn't tell you which tire in my rotation isn't the programmed one anymore. No issues since. I check the pressures every couple of weeks but overall it's been fine.
