Check engine light on 2020 TRD OR, 46k miles

I was going through my usual routine when the check engine light unexpectedly appeared. I visited my friend's shop, borrowed his OBD scanner, and found the listed faults below. If anyone has had a similar experience, I'd appreciate any feedback. Thank you, and have a great day.

“System too lean bank 1,2”
“Fuel performance/port injector
“Idle control system”

 

Check wiring (rodents) and intake(MAF, unplugged hoses and cracks).

 

I found none of the above.

 

Sounds highly suspect for something that new with so few miles.

I would delete the codes and see if it comes back.

If legit, sounds like it could be a bad fuel injector (among other possible things). But…is it running funny at all?

 

I have deleted the codes and they appear right back within 10-20 mins, and yes it started feeling kinda jumpy, feels completely different than what I’m used to.

 

You could look at freeze frame to see the injection mode, but you need to seek a professional help. Your fuel trims are pegged all the way. Could be either fuel pumps, sucking unmetered air, wiring.
Does engine temperature indicator work?
Post the freeze frame.

 

I'd get it to a dealer, although I think it will be an easy fix. Most like one of the following: O2 Sensor, MAF sensor, Intake manifold leak, Vacuum leak, or fuel injector.

 

What is the “usual routine”?

Any mods?

Update: brought the truck into the stealership and they quoted me $750 to swap out the MAF sensor and swap out my purge valve….

 

So...you're going to do the part swap yourself?

 

Parts alone will be around $300 (cheap if aftermarket). The remaining 450 is insane for 2 crews and clamps.

 

Sure, I'll have them handle it. While I could handle it myself, if it turns out to be a different issue and persists, I'd end up paying another diagnostic fee. This is also my first time bringing it to the dealership for any service, aside from the recall for the fuel pump earlier this year. I’ll keep you guys updated.

You shouldn't need a new MAF sensor after only 42k miles, IMO.

They're taking you for a ride. A $10 can of MAF sensor cleaner should be the next step before paying $750 for them to essentially give you the same result.

I get what you're saying about it could be a different issue...but my hunch is that if you pay them to replace the MAF and it turns out to be something else (especially if the CEL doesn't return until later on), they will be happy to charge you for a separate diagnostic and/or repair.

 

I appreciate your concern, and I informed them that I wasn't interested in the MAF sensor. Successfully negotiated the price down to $350.

 

Dang. On a 3 year old truck with less than 50k miles. Is this going to be covered under warranty?

 

If you have an aftermarket intake system, look for leaks, an over oiled reusable filter, or return to stock.
It does sound strange a MAF would fail so soon.

My Tacoma is still in its factory state; I avoid aftermarket modifications until it's about 10 years old. It serves as my dependable daily driver for school and occasional off-road adventures at the beach or in mild mud.

The dealer ended up replacing the vacuum purge valve, and the unstable idling issue seems to have subsided. I'll keep you updated.
